History of Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz
How it Started (1919–1945)
FC Bregenz was founded on June 28, 1919. Its team colors were black and white. This made it the fourth oldest football club in the Vorarlberg area.
In its early years, the club mostly played friendly games. They played against teams from Germany and Switzerland near Lake Constance. In 1927, FC Bregenz played in the Vorarlberger A-Klasse for the first time. This was the top league in Vorarlberg back then. They finished in second place.
Just one year later, in 1928, FC Bregenz became the champions of Vorarlberg! They beat teams like FA Turnerbund Lustenau (now SC Austria Lustenau) and FC Lustenau. In 1930, they finished fourth and were moved down from the A-Klasse.
By 1933, the Bregenz team was back in the top league. They stayed there until 1938. After 1938, the Vorarlberger A-Klasse was replaced. The best clubs from Vorarlberg, including FC Bregenz, then played against teams from Germany. This league was called the Bodensee-Vorarlberg Bezirksklasse. The 1941–42 season was stopped because of World War II.
After the War (1945–1999)
After World War II ended, FC Bregenz started playing football again. But they had to change their name. In 1945, the club was renamed Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz. The club's new logo was also designed that year.
By 1946, Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz was playing in the highest league in Vorarlberg again. This league was called 1. Klasse Vorarlberg. In 1950, a new league was created called the Arlbergliga. It included teams from Vorarlberg and Tyrol.
Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz won several championships. In 1954, they became the first club from Vorarlberg to reach the top league in Austria, the Staatsliga. However, they only stayed in the top league for one season before being moved down again. In 1960, the Regionalliga West was formed, and Bregenz played there for many years.
In 1966, Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz made it to Austria's top league for a second time. They even finished in a good sixth place in the 1966–67 season. Two years later, they were moved down again. But they returned in the 1970–71 season under a new sponsor name, SC Olymp Bregenz. After one year, they were moved down again.
The 1970s saw the club merge with other teams and change its name several times. For a short time in 1973–74, after joining with FC Rätia Bludenz, the club was called FC Vorarlberg. In 1974–75, it was named SC Vorwerk Vorarlberg (Bregenz) because of a new sponsor.
The biggest merger happened in 1979. Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz joined with FC Dornbirn 1913. They were called IG Bregenz/Dornbirn until 1987. In 1996, the team was promoted to the second division again as Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz. When Casinos Austria became their main sponsor, the club started playing as Casino SW Bregenz.
Top League, Europe, and Restart (1999–Present)
From 1999 to the 2004–05 season, the club played in the Austrian Bundesliga, which is Austria's top football league. They even played in European matches in the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2002 and 2004. They played against teams like Torino from Italy.
After a good period, the club started to have serious money problems. After a tough 2004–05 season, they were moved down to the second league. But they couldn't get a license to play the next season because of their financial issues. Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz then went bankrupt and had to close down.
However, the club was started again in 2005! The new team began playing in the 5th level of Austrian football. In the 2009–10 season, they started using the traditional black and white colors of the old SW Bregenz. On July 8, 2013, the club was officially renamed Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz again. They also took back the old club logo.
In 2016, the club was moved down from the Austrian Regionalliga West. But in the 2022–23 season, Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz won the Regionalliga West championship! This meant they were promoted back to the Austrian 2. Liga for the 2023–24 season.
Home Stadium
The ImmoAgentur Stadium is in Bregenz. It was built in 1994 and replaced an older stadium. It can hold 12,000 people, with about 4,000 seats.
The most people ever to watch a game there was 10,800. This was for a local derby match against SC Austria Lustenau in 1999. Since the original SW Bregenz club went bankrupt in 2005, the new club has played its home games here. The stadium is very close to the city center, near the train station and Lake Constance.
European Matches
Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz has played in the UEFA Intertoto Cup twice. This is a competition for European clubs.
