The Mystery Begins
The Mystery Inc. gang, including Scooby-Doo and Shaggy, travel to Chicago, Illinois. They are there for a big talent show called Talent Star. Fred and Daphne are even finalists, hoping to win with their songwriting skills! The show is hosted by a lively person named Brick Pimiento.
When they arrive, they learn that the opera house where the show will be held has a problem. A mysterious Phantom is scaring everyone! This Phantom really wants one of the finalists, a spoiled girl named Christine, to win. Her parents are also quite rude. Fred and Daphne also become friends with another finalist, Emma Gale, who plays the violin.
Scooby and Shaggy don't want to be left out. They decide to show Brick Pimiento a juggling act. They think it will be a huge hit! But Pimiento says that "juggling stinks." So, throughout the movie, Scooby and Shaggy keep trying to impress him with other silly acts. None of them are very good.
The Phantom's First Appearance
Soon after checking in for the talent show, the Phantom appears in the opera house. Fred, Daphne, and Velma try to catch him using the security cameras. But they can't, because the Phantom seems to be in many places at once!
While being chased by the Phantom, Shaggy and Scooby notice a strange lemon smell. After this, the gang splits up to look for clues. Fred and Daphne meet Mel Richmond, who owns the opera house. Richmond tells them that a Phantom also caused trouble in the opera house thirty-five years ago. Back then, it was a disco!
Sabotage and Suspects
The next day, the dress rehearsal for the talent show begins. Fred and Daphne meet Emma's parents. They hope to win the prize money to save their home from losing money. During the rehearsal, the Phantom messes up most of the finalists' acts. This leaves only Christine, Emma, and Fred and Daphne as the remaining contestants.
Because of these attacks, Fred and Daphne decide to become bait to catch the Phantom. The gang manages to find a Phantom, but it's the original one from the 70s! His name is Steve Trilby. Steve tells the gang that he vandalized the opera house in the 70s because he hated disco music. Now, he only goes into the opera house to get food.
The gang returns to the stage and finds the Phantom setting the opera house on fire. With Steve's help, they catch this Phantom. It turns out to be Mel Richmond, the owner! He was hoping to get insurance money because the opera house was losing money. However, the gang soon realizes Richmond is not the Phantom they are truly after. They hear the real Phantom threatening to destroy the place unless Christine wins. Richmond then says he got the idea from the earlier Phantom attacks.
Unmasking the Phantoms
Later that night, the gang uses Emma as bait. They manage to capture the Phantom. It turns out to be Christine's father, Lance, wearing a special suit.
After this, Shaggy and Scooby discover that the assistant director, Dewey Ottoman, is also a Phantom! They see him putting on lemon-scented hand sanitizer, which matches the smell they noticed earlier. They rush to Ottoman's office. There, they find a magazine about the "Soap Diamond," which is on display nearby. They quickly realize Ottoman sent all the police to the opera house so the diamond would be unguarded.
They rush to the mineral center and find Ottoman running out of the building. Ottoman trips and drops the Soap Diamond, which Scooby catches! Ottoman chases the gang toward a drawbridge. Fred tricks him into jumping into a barge full of garbage by swapping the diamond with a dog bone. Ottoman is arrested.
The Talent Show Finale
The gang goes back to the opera house. They learn that Fred and Daphne are doing a tie-breaking performance against Emma. They arrive just in time for Fred and Daphne to perform. Their performance puts them in the lead for votes.
However, they realize what it would mean if Emma lost. So, they decide to tell some of Shaggy and Scooby's silly jokes. This makes them lose enough votes, allowing Emma to win! At the end of the show, Velma plays footage that shows Brick Pimiento putting on the Phantom costume. Pimiento admits he used the Phantom to make the show more popular. After Pimiento is taken away by the police, Steve Trilby finishes hosting the show. He does a great job and impresses K.T.
During the credits, the gang stops at a gas station. They see on the news that Steve has become the new host of Talent Star for its 10th season! Velma tells Daphne to talk to Fred about their possible relationship. Shaggy and Scooby tell Fred to do the same thing. Then, the gang heads off to Goose Lake to solve the mystery of the Goose Lake Monster.
