About S. R. Nathan
His Early Life
S. R. Nathan was born in Singapore on July 3, 1924. He was an Indian Singaporean. His childhood was spent in Muar, Johor, with his two older brothers and parents.
Young Nathan later returned to Singapore to live with an uncle. He went to several schools there, including Rangoon Road Afternoon School and Victoria School. He started working before finishing his studies. During the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, Nathan worked as a translator for the Japanese civilian police. After the war, he finished his secondary education by studying on his own. In 1954, he graduated with honors from the University of Malaya (which was in Singapore at the time).
Becoming President of Singapore
S. R. Nathan became the sixth President of Singapore. He was strongly supported by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew. Nathan took over from the fifth President of Singapore, Ong Teng Cheong. He was sworn in on September 1, 1999.
On July 12, 2005, Nathan announced he wanted to be President again. He applied to the Presidential Elections Committee. Three other people also applied, but on August 13, the Committee said they were not suitable. This meant Nathan became President of Singapore for a second time on August 17, 2005. His second term began on September 1, 2005.
His term ended on August 31, 2011. After that, a new President was elected. Tony Tan Keng Yam replaced him in the 2011 Presidential Elections in Singapore.
His Family Life
Nathan was a Hindu. He was married to Urmila (Umi) Nandey. They had a daughter, a son, and three grandchildren.
His Passing Away
On July 31, 2016, Nathan had a stroke. He was taken to Singapore General Hospital's Intensive Care Unit. He passed away in the hospital on August 22, 2016, at 9:48 pm SST. He was 92 years old. He was survived by his wife Urmila Nandey, their daughter Juthika, son Osith, three grandchildren, and his sister Sundari.
