Playing Career Highlights
Club Football Journey
Sergi was born in Les Franqueses del Vallès, Barcelona, Catalonia. He grew up playing football in the youth system of the famous club FC Barcelona. He had not yet played in La Liga, Spain's top league, when he was called up by the first-team manager, Johan Cruyff. This was for a UEFA Champions League game against Galatasaray S.K. on 24 November 1993.
From that moment on, Sergi became a key player for Barcelona. He played in at least 31 matches every season until 1999. With Barça, he won three league titles, two Spanish Cups, and two Spanish Super Cups. He also helped the team win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1997 and the UEFA Super Cup that same year. He often played alongside another youth player, Albert Ferrer, on the other side of the defense.
Later, the coach Louis van Gaal decided Sergi was no longer needed at Barcelona. Sergi then joined Atlético Madrid. He played three good seasons there, even though he received 33 yellow cards.
Playing for Spain
Soon after joining Barcelona's main team, Sergi made his debut for the Spanish national team. This happened on 9 February 1994, in a friendly match against Poland in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. He scored his only goal for Spain in that game.
He went on to represent Spain in many big tournaments. These included the 1994 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 1996, the 1998 World Cup, and Euro 2000. In total, he played 56 matches for his country.
Coaching Career Journey
Starting at Barcelona Youth Teams
In July 2009, after spending several years working in marketing and running football camps for young players, Barjuán returned to Barcelona. He was named the manager of their Juvenil B youth team. During his time there, he coached talented young players like Gerard Deulofeu, Patric, and Rafinha. These players later went on to play for the senior Barcelona team.
Managing Recreativo
Barjuán got his first job coaching a professional team on 22 May 2012. He signed a three-year contract with Recreativo de Huelva, a team in the Segunda División (Spain's second division). His first game as their coach was on 18 August, where his team lost 2–0 to Xerez CD.
In his second year with Recreativo, Barjuán's team just missed out on a chance to play in the promotion play-offs on the very last day of the season. He then ended his contract in June 2014.
Coaching Almería
Barjuán became the manager of UD Almería on 6 April 2015. He took over from Juan Ignacio Martínez, who had been fired. His first game in charge was two days later, a 4–0 loss away to his former club, Barcelona.
On 3 October 2015, Almería was back in the second division. Barjuán was dismissed after a 2–2 draw at home against CD Tenerife.
Time at Mallorca
Barjuán started coaching again in April 2017, this time at RCD Mallorca. He left the club when his contract ended at the close of the season. Mallorca was relegated to Segunda División B (the third division) for the first time in 36 years that season.
Moving to China: Zhejiang Greentown
On 26 November 2017, Barjuán, who was 45 years old, moved abroad for the first time in his career. He took charge of the Chinese club Zhejiang Greentown F.C. in the China League One for two seasons. He lost his job on 4 July 2019. This happened after his team won only two of their last ten games, leaving them in sixth place.
Back to Barcelona B and Interim Role
In June 2021, Barjuán was appointed manager of FC Barcelona Atlètic (Barcelona B team) with a two-year contract. He replaced Francisco Javier García Pimienta. On 28 October 2021, after the main team's coach Ronald Koeman was dismissed, Sergi was put in temporary charge of the senior Barcelona squad.
Two days later, in his first game as interim coach, his team drew 1–1 at home with Deportivo Alavés. In his second game, Barcelona won 1–0 against FC Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League group stage.
After his Barcelona B team missed out on a playoff spot for the 2021–22 season, Barjuán was dismissed from that role. However, he stayed at Barcelona and was put in charge of their global football academies in October 2022.
