Albert Ferrer Llopis was born on June 6, 1970. He is a Spanish former footballer who played as a right-back. After his playing career, he became a manager.

Ferrer played for Barcelona for almost ten years. Later, he moved to England to play for Chelsea until he retired. In Spain, he was often called Chapi. He played in 221 La Liga matches during his nine seasons there.

He also played for the Spanish national team more than 30 times. Ferrer represented Spain in two World Cups and at the 1992 Olympic Games, where his team won the gold medal. He started his coaching career in 2010 with Vitesse.

Playing Career Highlights

Time at Barcelona

Albert Ferrer was born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. He was known as a fast and strong defender. He began his professional career with FC Barcelona B.

Then, he was loaned to CD Tenerife for the 1989–90 season. He made his first appearance in La Liga, Spain's top football league, when he was just 19 years old.

Ferrer returned to the main Barcelona team the next summer. He quickly became the first-choice right-back and stayed in that position for eight years. He scored one goal in the league during this time. He often played alongside another young player from Barcelona's youth system, Sergi Barjuán.

Ferrer was a very important part of Barcelona's famous Dream Team. With Barcelona, he won many trophies. These included five league titles, one European Cup, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, two Spanish cups (Copa del Rey), four Spanish Supercups (Supercopa de España), and two UEFA Super Cups. He left Barcelona in June 1998.

Playing for Chelsea

In June 1998, Ferrer joined Chelsea in England. He quickly became a key player for the team. He helped Chelsea qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in his first season (1998–99).

The next year, Chelsea won the FA Cup. Ferrer missed the final match due to an injury. Chelsea also reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League that season. Ferrer played in 14 of 16 Champions League games and scored his only goal for Chelsea in a 2–0 win against Hertha BSC.

In the 2000–01 season, Ferrer had fewer chances to play because of injuries and the manager's team rotation. He only played in 14 league games. Chelsea reached another FA Cup final in 2002. Again, Ferrer did not play in the final, even though he played in the semi-final against Fulham.

He played only seven times in his last two years at Chelsea. He left the club in May 2003 when his contract ended. He played a total of 113 matches for Chelsea and retired from playing football shortly after, at the age of 33.

International Football Career

Albert Ferrer played 36 matches for the Spanish national team. His first game was on September 4, 1991. It was a friendly match against Uruguay in Oviedo, which Spain won.

After that, Ferrer regularly played for the national team. He was a starter in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He also played one game in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, which was a 3–2 loss against Nigeria. He missed Euro 1996 and Euro 2000 because of injuries.

In 1992, Ferrer was a key player for the Spanish Olympic team. This team won the gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics, which were held in his hometown of Barcelona.

Coaching and Management

After retiring as a player, Albert Ferrer worked as a color commentator for Spanish TV channels. In October 2010, he became the new head coach of SBV Vitesse in the Eredivisie, the top Dutch football league.

Ferrer helped Vitesse finish in 15th place in the 2010–11 season, narrowly avoiding relegation. After that season, he was replaced by another coach.

On February 17, 2014, Ferrer was appointed manager of Segunda División club Córdoba CF in Spain. His team finished the season in seventh place. They then won the play-off final against UD Las Palmas. This meant Córdoba returned to Spain's top league for the first time in 42 years!

However, Ferrer was fired on October 20, 2014. Córdoba was in last place in La Liga with only four points from eight matches. On June 20, 2015, he was named manager of RCD Mallorca, signing a one-year deal. After winning only three of 15 games in the second division, he was dismissed on November 30, 2015.

On August 29, 2017, Ferrer returned to Barcelona to coach their legends team, which is made up of former famous players.
