Sgùrr Eilde Mòr is a tall mountain in Scotland. It is part of the Mamores mountain range. You can find it about 6 kilometers (about 3.7 miles) northeast of a town called Kinlochleven.

This mountain looks like a cone and is quite steep. It is made up of loose rocks called scree and hard, shiny rocks called quartzite boulders. The very top has a layer of schist, which is another type of rock.

Sgùrr Eilde Mòr stands 1010 meters (3314 feet) high. Because it is over 3000 feet tall, it is known as a Munro. Munros are popular goals for people who enjoy hillwalking, which is like hiking in the mountains.

What is a Munro?

Scotland's Tallest Peaks

In Scotland, a "Munro" is a mountain that is at least 3,000 feet (914.4 meters) high. These mountains are named after Sir Hugh Munro. He was the first person to list all the Scottish mountains of this height in 1891.

There are 282 Munros across Scotland. Many people enjoy the challenge of climbing all of them. This activity is called "Munro bagging." Sgùrr Eilde Mòr is one of these special peaks.

How to Climb the Mountain

Most people start their climb of Sgùrr Eilde Mòr from Kinlochleven. There is a special path that was once used by deer stalkers. This path leads to a "col," which is a low point or pass between two peaks. This col is located at a place called Coire an Lochan.

From the col, climbers can choose to go up either the south or the west side of the mountain. Both paths are steep and covered in large, loose rocks. It is a challenging climb, but the views from the top are amazing!

The Mountain's Name

The name "Sgùrr Eilde Mòr" comes from the Gaelic language. It means "big peak of the hind." A hind is a female deer, so the name connects the mountain to the wildlife that lives there.
