Shabazz Nagee Muhammad (born November 13, 1992) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for the Hangtuah Jakarta team in the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL). Before becoming a pro, he played one season of college basketball for the UCLA Bruins. He was chosen as the 14th pick in the 2013 NBA draft.
Muhammad attended Bishop Gorman High School. In his senior year, he was named Mr. Basketball USA and Naismith Prep Player of the Year. He was considered one of the best young basketball players in 2012. During his single season at UCLA, he earned All-American honors. He was also named to the first team of the Pac-12 and was co-Freshman of the Year.

Early Life and Family
Shabazz Muhammad was born in Long Beach, California. His father, Ron Holmes, was a tall and talented point guard for the USC Trojans men's basketball team in the 1980s. His mother, Faye Muhammad, was also a point guard and a track star at Long Beach State.
Shabazz is the middle child in his family. His older sister, Asia, is a professional tennis player. His younger brother, Rashad, played basketball in high school. When Shabazz was six years old, he was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome.
High School Basketball Journey
Muhammad went to Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas Valley, Nevada. This was a Catholic high school known for its strong sports programs. He was one of the few freshmen to join the varsity basketball team. In his junior year, Muhammad was a top player for Bishop Gorman. He averaged 25.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He was also named the 2011 Gatorade Player of the Year for Nevada.
Muhammad kept a diary for SLAM Magazine during his 2011–12 high school season. He played in the 2012 McDonald's All-American Boys Game. He led the West team to a 106–102 win and was named the game's MVP. He scored 21 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Muhammad also won the 2012 Powerade Jam Fest Dunk Contest. Experts rated him as one of the top players in his class. CBS college basketball analyst Greg Anthony called him a "once-in-a-generation talent."
College Career at UCLA
Many colleges wanted Muhammad to play for them. He chose to attend UCLA on April 11, 2012. Before his first game, he was temporarily not allowed to play. This was due to rules about receiving benefits during visits to other universities. After missing three games, he was allowed to play again. His family had to repay about $1,600.
In his first game, Muhammad scored 15 points. He became a starter in the next game, scoring 21 points. He later scored a college-high 27 points, including a game-winning shot. This helped UCLA win in overtime against No. 7 Missouri. He also scored 23 points in a big win against No. 6 Arizona.
Muhammad received national honors for his play. He was named a second-team All-American by Sporting News. He was also a Freshman All-American selection. He made the first team for the All-Pac-12. He was also named Pac-12 co-Freshman of the Year. He finished the season averaging 17.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
Professional Basketball Journey
Starting in the NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves (2013–2018)
Muhammad decided to enter the 2013 NBA draft on April 16, 2013. He was drafted 14th overall by the Utah Jazz. His draft rights were then traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was sent to the Iowa Energy in the NBA Development League for a short time. There, he averaged 24.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
First Seasons with the Timberwolves
In his first season (2013–14), Muhammad played limited minutes. On February 25, 2014, he scored a season-high 20 points. He also grabbed five rebounds in a win against the Phoenix Suns. His season ended early due to a knee injury.
The 2014–15 season was better for Muhammad. He improved his game and lost weight. On December 30, 2014, he scored a career-high 30 points. He was playing well, averaging 16.9 points, before an injury sidelined him. Despite this, he was chosen for the Rising Stars Challenge during the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend. His season ended early again due to finger surgery.
Later Years with Minnesota
Muhammad played all 82 games in the 2015–16 season. He averaged 10.5 points per game. He set a new career high with 35 points on April 5, 2016. This was in an overtime win against the Golden State Warriors. In the 2016–17 season, he scored 22 points in 18 minutes against the Milwaukee Bucks. He helped the Timberwolves win that game.
On September 15, 2017, Muhammad re-signed with the Timberwolves. He played his last game for them on February 23, 2018. He was then released by the team on March 1.
Milwaukee Bucks (2018)
On March 4, 2018, Muhammad joined the Milwaukee Bucks. He scored a season-high 22 points on April 9 in a win against the Orlando Magic. He later re-signed with the Bucks for training camp but was released before the season started.
Playing Overseas: China and the Philippines
After his time in the NBA, Muhammad played in other leagues. On October 12, 2018, he signed with the Shanxi Brave Dragons in China. He scored 26 points in his first game. On January 5, 2019, he had an amazing game, scoring 60 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Later in 2019, he signed with the Shenzhen Aviators, another Chinese team.
In 2021, Muhammad signed with the Grand Rapids Gold in the NBA G League. In 2022, he joined the San Miguel Beermen in the Philippines. On March 5, 2022, he had a huge game with 57 points and 19 rebounds. He helped his team come back from a 26-point deficit to win.
Recent Teams (2023-Present)
In 2023, Muhammad played for Beirut Club in Lebanon. He also played for the Guangdong Southern Tigers in China. In 2024, he joined the Stockton Kings in the NBA G League. He then played for Trotamundos de Carabobo in Venezuela. In September 2024, he returned to the Philippines to play for the Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots. As of 2025, he plays for Sagesse SC in Lebanon.
Personal Life
Shabazz Muhammad comes from a family of athletes. His uncle, Stephone Paige, played nine seasons in the National Football League (NFL). His aunt, Robin Holmes-Sullivan, was a four-year starter for Cal State Fullerton's basketball team.
In 2013, it was reported that Muhammad's actual birth year was 1992, not 1993 as previously thought. This meant he was a year older than many believed at the time.
