A Star is Born: Shangela's Career
How Shangela Began
Pierce's drag character, Shangela, was created in January 2009. He was helping with a drag performance of the song "Single Ladies" for a charity event. When one of the performers couldn't make it, Pierce stepped in. The club's manager was so impressed that he asked Shangela to perform again the next week. This was the start of her amazing career.
Competing on RuPaul's Drag Race
After only five months of performing, Shangela was chosen for season two of RuPaul's Drag Race. She was eliminated in the first episode but was invited back for season three, where she placed sixth.
Shangela made history by returning for a third time to compete on RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars season three. She was a top contender for the crown but finished in third/fourth place. Her time on the show made her a fan favorite. In 2019, New York magazine named Shangela the second "most powerful drag queen in America" out of 100 former contestants.
Shangela's drag mother, who is like a mentor in the drag world, is Alyssa Edwards, another famous contestant from RuPaul's Drag Race.
Famous Catchphrase
Shangela is known for her famous catchphrase, "Halleloo!" The Los Angeles Times called it one of the top terms learned from reality TV in 2010. She also created a comedy character named Laquifa, who became popular on the show.
