Shelter Cove is located about 138 feet (42 meters) above sea level. It has a nine-hole golf course and a small Shelter Cove Airport. The community gets its services from the Humboldt County Resort Improvement District #1. The local harbor district helps manage access to the sea for boats. In 2020, about 803 people lived here.

Shipwreck Near Shelter Cove

On July 21, 1907, a big event happened near Shelter Cove. Two ships, the Columbia and the San Pedro, crashed into each other. This happened during a thick fog. The Columbia sank, and 88 people lost their lives. The San Pedro was badly damaged but stayed afloat. Its crew helped rescue people from the Columbia.

Why Shelter Cove is Secluded

The area around Shelter Cove has very steep hills and cliffs. Because of this, building State Route 1 (the "Shoreline Highway") was too hard. So, the highway does not go through this part of the coast. This made Shelter Cove a very quiet and hidden fishing village. Even though it's only about 230 miles (370 km) north of San Francisco, it's hard to reach. You can get there by boat, a small mountain road, or by flying into the Shelter Cove Airport.

Because it's so hidden, Shelter Cove is a popular place for vacations. Many people come here to relax or to retire. Fun activities include fishing, whale watching, and hiking. People also enjoy diving for abalone and other outdoor adventures.

In 1998, the Cape Mendocino Light was moved to Mal Coombs Park. This was a lighthouse from Cape Mendocino. Shelter Cove also had a post office from 1892 to 1933.
