Shelton is a lively area located in the city of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England. It sits right between two other important places, Hanley and Stoke-upon-Trent.

Exploring Shelton's Past

Shelton has a long and interesting history, going back many years.

Ancient Roman Roads

Did you know that an old Roman road, called the Rykeneld Street, used to pass very close to where the Stoke-on-Trent railway station is today? This shows that the area has been important for travel for a very long time!

Early Pottery Making

Shelton was also known for its pottery. As far back as 1685, skilled craftspeople, known as artisans, were making pottery here. One of the first recorded potters was Thomas Miles, who created beautiful white stoneware.

First Gas Works

Shelton was home to the very first gas works in the area known as the Potteries. These works opened in 1825 on Lower Bedford Street. They were owned by the British Gaslight Company and supplied gas to nearby Hanley and Stoke.

Pottery Federation Club

In 1951, a special club for pottery makers was started. It's called the British Pottery Manufacturer's Federation Club. This large private club is still open today, right across from the Stoke-on-Trent railway station.
