Shingle Run is a small stream in Pennsylvania, USA. It flows through parts of Lycoming County and Columbia County. This stream is about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) long. It flows through Jordan Township and Pine Township. The area of land that drains into Shingle Run, called its watershed, is 1.63 square miles (4.2 km2). Shingle Run has several smaller streams that flow into it, but none of them have names. At least one bridge crosses over the stream. You can find trout living in its waters. The stream got its name because there used to be many sawmills nearby that made wooden shingles.

Where Does Shingle Run Flow?

Shingle Run starts its journey near Crist Hill Road in Jordan Township, Lycoming County. It first flows southwest for a short distance. Then, it turns and flows mostly south. After a while, it leaves Jordan Township and Lycoming County.

Once it leaves Lycoming County, Shingle Run enters Pine Township in Columbia County. It keeps flowing south, moving alongside Shingle Run Road. After about a mile, the stream flows almost directly south for more than a mile. The valley around the stream becomes quite deep, several hundred feet down. Along its path, a small, unnamed stream joins it from the right side. Finally, Shingle Run meets another stream called West Branch Run. This meeting point is close to a place called California Hollow.

Shingle Run joins West Branch Run about 1.82 miles (2.93 km) before West Branch Run reaches its own end.

Smaller Streams Joining Shingle Run

Shingle Run has a few smaller streams that flow into it. These are called tributaries. They are all smaller than Shingle Run itself. However, none of these smaller streams have official names.

Understanding Shingle Run's Geography

The land around the end of Shingle Run is about 794 feet (242 m) above sea level. Where the stream begins, the land is higher. Its source is between 1,200 feet (370 m) and 1,220 feet (370 m) above sea level.

At least one bridge crosses over Shingle Run. This bridge carries State Route 4028, helping people travel over the stream.

The Shingle Run Watershed

The watershed of Shingle Run covers an area of 1.63 square miles (4.2 km2). A watershed is all the land where water drains into a particular stream or river. Shingle Run's watershed is part of a larger area called the Lower North Branch Susquehanna River drainage basin. The stream is shown on the United States Geological Survey map called Lairdsville. The end of Shingle Run is in the southern part of Pine Township, Columbia County. It is also close to the small community of Pine Summit.

History and How Shingle Run Got Its Name

Shingle Run was officially added to the Geographic Names Information System on August 2, 1979. This system helps keep track of names for places like rivers and mountains. Its special ID number in the system is 1187539. In the 1800s, the area where Shingle Run ends was part of a school district known as District No. 1.

There was once a plan to build a new bridge over Shingle Run. This plan also included putting concrete paving in the streambed (the bottom of the stream).

Shingle Run is named after the sawmills that used to be in the area. These sawmills would cut wood into thin pieces called shingles, which were used for roofs. On some maps from the mid-1800s, the stream was even called "Thumb Shingle Mill Run."

Wildlife in Shingle Run

Wild trout live and reproduce naturally in Shingle Run. You can find them all along the stream, from where it starts to where it ends.
