Pakistan's coach, Bob Woolmer, and former captain Imran Khan supported Malik's captaincy. They believed he had a good understanding of the game. In his first series as captain, Pakistan won against Sri Lanka.

Malik was captain for two years. He led Pakistan in three Test matches, 36 ODIs, and 17 T20Is. He stepped down in January 2009.

In 2018 and 2019, Malik took charge of Pakistan's limited-overs team again. This happened when the regular captain, Sarfraz Ahmed, was not available.

After Captaincy

In 2010, Shoaib Malik was banned from the national team for a year. This was due to problems within the team. However, his ban was overturned a few months later.

After returning to international cricket in 2015, he became an important part of the Pakistan team. He helped them win the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. They defeated their rivals India in the final.
