Dr. Shriram Lagoo (born November 16, 1927 – died December 17, 2019) was a famous Indian actor. He worked in both Hindi and Marathi films and plays. What's cool is that he was also an ENT surgeon, which means he was a doctor specializing in ears, nose, and throat!
He was known for playing important supporting characters in movies. Dr. Lagoo acted in over 250 films. He also directed more than 20 Marathi plays. He even won an award, the 1978 Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor, for the Hindi film Gharaonda. His life story is written in his autobiography called Lamaan, which means "the carrier of goods".

His Early Life
Shreeram Lagoo was born in Satara district, Maharashtra, India. His parents were Balakrishna Chintaman Lagoo and Satyabhama Lagoo. He was the oldest of their four children.
He went to Bhave High School and then to Fergusson College. He also studied at B. J. Medical College in Pune, India. There, he earned two medical degrees: MBBS and MS.
Becoming an Actor
Shreeram Lagoo started acting in plays while he was still in medical college. He loved theatre so much that he and his friends, like Bhalba Kelkar, started a group called "Progressive Dramatic Association."
Even while he was acting, he continued his medical studies. He became an ENT surgeon in the early 1950s. He practiced medicine in Pune for six years. He also went to Canada and England for more medical training.
He worked as a doctor in Pune, India, and even in Tabora, Tanzania, during the 1960s. But he never stopped his theatre work. He was part of "Progressive Dramatic Association" in Pune and "Rangaayan" in Mumbai.
Finally, in 1969, he decided to become a full-time actor. His first play as a full-time actor was Ithe Oshalala Mrityu. He became very famous for his leading role in the play 'Natsamrat'. He was a legend in Marathi cinema. He starred in many popular Marathi movies like Sinhasan, Pinjra, and Mukta.
His wife, Deepa Lagoo, is also a well-known actress in theatre, TV, and films. They had two sons and a daughter. Dr. Lagoo also started an award called the Tanveer Samman. This award honors promising theatre artists in India. He named it after his late son, Tanveer Lagoo.
Dr. Lagoo also gave many great performances in Hindi films. He often acted alongside famous actors like Rajesh Khanna in movies such as Thodisi Bewafai and Souten. Some of his other memorable Hindi films include Muqaddar Ka Sikander, Lawaris, and Sadma.

His Beliefs
Shriram Lagoo was known for being a rationalist. This means he believed in using reason and logic to understand the world, rather than relying on religious beliefs or superstitions.
Once, when he received an award called Punyabhushan (which means "Pride of Pune"), he was asked about a play where he stood in front of a statue of Lord Vitthal. He was asked if he stood there as a religious follower or just as part of his acting role. Dr. Lagoo replied that he stood there as if he was in front of a stone statue.
He even wrote an article called "Time to Retire God." This article caused a lot of discussion in India. In it, he explained his logical reasons for believing that the idea of God might not be needed anymore.
He was also very active in the movement against superstition in Maharashtra. He often spoke at events, explaining why he believed that thinking about God was just another form of superstition.
