Shruti Haasan (born on January 28, 1986) is a talented Indian actress and singer. She works in Telugu, Hindi, and Tamil movies. Shruti has won many awards, including two Filmfare Award South and seven South Indian International Movie Awards. She was also listed in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 in 2015 and 2016.

Shruti is the daughter of famous actor Kamal Haasan and actress Sarika Thakur. She started acting as a child. Her first adult role was in the Hindi film Luck (2009). She then made her debut in Telugu with Anaganaga O Dheerudu and in Tamil with 7aum Arivu, both in 2011. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South for both films.

Shruti became very popular in South Indian cinema. Some of her successful Telugu films include Gabbar Singh (2012), Race Gurram (2014), Srimanthudu (2015), and Krack (2021). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu for her role in Race Gurram. She has also starred in Tamil films like Vedalam (2015) and Hindi films like Gabbar Is Back (2015). Her movie Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire (2023) is one of her highest-earning films.

Shruti Haasan was born in Madras (now Chennai) to actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika Thakur. Her family is Tamil. Her father is a Brahmin Iyengar. Her mother, Sarika, has a Maharashtrian father and a Rajput mother. Shruti's younger sister, Akshara Haasan, is also an actress. Her uncle is actor Charuhasan. Her cousins, Anu Hasan and Suhasini Maniratnam, are also actresses.

Shruti studied at Lady Andal school in Chennai. Later, she moved to Mumbai to study psychology at St. Andrew's College. She then went to the Musicians Institute in California, USA, to learn more about music.

Shruti's Acting Journey

First Steps in Acting (2000; 2009–2011)

Shruti first appeared in a movie as a child. She had a small role in Hey Ram, a film directed by her father, Kamal Haasan. In 2008, she was supposed to star in a film called Endrendrum Punnagai, but it did not start production.

Her first main acting role as an adult was in the Hindi film Luck (2009). She played a dual role in this action movie. The film did not do well, and critics felt she deserved a better start. After this, she worked on music for her father's films, Unnaipol Oruvan and Eenadu.

In 2011, Shruti made her Telugu film debut in Anaganaga O Dheerudu. She played a gypsy with magical healing powers. Critics praised her performance, saying she looked "attractive" and had a "mystical aura." Her second Hindi film was Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji. Even though her role was small, the film was a success.

Later in 2010, Shruti was chosen to star in the Tamil film 7aum Arivu opposite Suriya. She played a young scientist trying to bring back the genes of an ancient monk. The Tamil film 3 was a big moment for Shruti. She played the character of Janani. The film became very popular, partly because of the hit song "Why This Kolaveri Di?". Critics praised Shruti's acting, saying she had "come a long way."

In 2012, her Telugu film Gabbar Singh was released. It was a remake of a Hindi film and became a huge success. Shruti played a village girl named Bhagyalakshmi. Her role was well-received by critics.

In 2013, Shruti had four film releases. Her Telugu film Balupu was a "super-hit." She also starred in two Hindi films, Ramaiya Vastavaiya and D-Day. For D-Day, she played a character from Karachi and also sang a song called "Alvida." Her final film that year was the Telugu movie Ramayya Vasthavayya.

Continued Success and Recognition (2014–2019)

In 2014, Shruti's Telugu film Yevadu was a big success. She played a college student. Her next Telugu film, Race Gurram, was a "blockbuster" and the highest-earning film of the year. Shruti played an emotionless girl named Spandana. She received great reviews and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu for this role. She also worked as a costume designer for her Tamil film Poojai.

In 2015, Shruti appeared in five films. She played a lawyer in the Hindi film Gabbar Is Back, which was a success. She then played a rural development student in the Telugu film Srimanthudu. Critics praised her performance, saying she did her part with "grace and earnestness."

She also starred in the Hindi film Welcome Back. Shruti then appeared in two Tamil films, Puli and Vedalam. Both films were successful.

In 2020, Shruti appeared in the short film Devi. It tells the story of nine women who become like sisters in difficult situations. She also appeared in Yaara and the anthology film Putham Pudhu Kaalai.

In 2021, Shruti had five film releases. Her Telugu film Krack was a big success. She also appeared in The Power and the Netflix anthology Pitta Kathalu. Later, she played a role in the commercially successful Telugu film Vakeel Saab. Her last film that year was the Tamil movie Laabam.

In 2022, Shruti made her Hindi web series debut in Bestseller. She played a character who wants to be a writer.

In 2023, Shruti played a singer in Veera Simha Reddy. She also played a RAW Agent in Waltair Veerayya. Both films were among the highest-earning Telugu films of the year. After a song appearance in Hi Nanna, she starred in Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, which became the highest-earning Telugu film of 2023.

Shruti also made her English film debut in The Eye. She will appear in the Hindi-Telugu film Dacoit and the India-U.K. film Chennai Story.

Besides acting, Shruti Haasan is a talented singer. She has been nominated for awards for her singing. Some of her popular songs include "Kannazhaga Kaalazhaga" from 3 and "Junction Lo" from Aagadu. She has also sung songs in Hindi films like "Aazma (Luck Is The Key)" for Luck.

Shruti started her music directing career with her father's film Unnaipol Oruvan (2009). She won the Best Music Director award for this film at the Edison Awards. She has also formed her own music band.

Shruti Haasan is in a relationship with visual artist Santanu Hazarika.
