Shruti Haasan was born on January 28, 1986. She is a talented Indian actress and singer. Shruti mainly works in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi films. She is known as one of the highest-paid actresses in South Indian cinema.

Shruti has won many awards, including two Filmfare Awards South and seven SIIMA Awards. She was also featured in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list in 2015 and 2016.

Shruti is the daughter of famous actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan and actress Sarika Thakur. She started acting as a child. Her first adult role was in the Hindi film Luck (2009). In 2011, she made her debut in Telugu films with Anaganaga O Dheerudu and in Tamil films with 7 Aum Arivu. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South for both these movies.

After a big success with the Tamil film 3 (2012), Shruti became a leading actress in South India. She starred in many successful Telugu films like Gabbar Singh (2012), Race Gurram (2014), Srimanthudu (2015), and Krack (2021). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu for Race Gurram.

Shruti has also starred in popular Tamil films such as Vedalam (2015) and Si3 (2017). Her Hindi film successes include Gabbar Is Back (2015) and Welcome Back (2015). Shruti Haasan was born on January 28, 1986, in Madras (now Chennai). Her parents are actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika Thakur. Her family is Tamil. Her father is a Tamilian Brahmin, and her mother has Marathi and Rajput family roots. Her parents got married when she was one year old and divorced in 2004. Shruti's younger sister, Akshara Haasan, is also an actress. Her uncle is actor and lawyer Charuhasan. Actresses Suhasini Maniratnam and Anu Hasan are her cousins.

Shruti went to Lady Andal school in Chennai. Later, she moved to Mumbai to study psychology at St. Andrew's College. She was very interested in cinema and music. She then traveled to the US to learn more about music at the Musicians Institute in California. After that, she returned to Chennai.

Acting Journey

Starting Out (2000; 2009–2011)

Shruti's first appearance in a movie was as a child. She had a small role in the Tamil-Hindi film Hey Ram (2000). This movie was directed by her father, Kamal Haasan.

In 2008, Shruti decided to make her official acting debut. She signed up for the Hindi film Luck, starring opposite Imran Khan. She played two roles in this action movie. The film was released in July 2009.

In 2011, Shruti made her Telugu film debut in Anaganaga O Dheerudu. She played a gypsy with special healing powers. The film received good reviews, and her acting was praised. Her second Hindi film was Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji.

Later in 2010, Shruti was chosen to star in the Tamil film 7 Aum Arivu with Suriya. She played a young scientist in the movie. Her performance was well-received by critics. Her next Telugu film was Oh My Friend, a romantic comedy. For this role, Shruti learned Kuchipudi dance. The Tamil film 3 was a major turning point for Shruti. She starred opposite Dhanush in this romantic drama. The film became very popular, partly because of the hit song "Why This Kolaveri Di?". Critics praised Shruti's performance in the movie.

Her second film in 2012 was the Telugu movie Gabbar Singh. She played a village girl in this film, which starred Pawan Kalyan. The movie was a huge success and led to more film offers for Shruti. She won her first SIIMA Award for Best Actress – Telugu for this role.

In 2013, Shruti had four film releases. Her Telugu film Balupu was a "super-hit". She also appeared in two Hindi films: Ramaiya Vastavaiya and D-Day. In D-Day, she played a character named Suraiya. Continued Success (2014–2020)

Shruti's first film of 2014 was the Telugu movie Yevadu, which was a big success. She then starred in Race Gurram with Allu Arjun. This film was a "blockbuster" and the highest-earning Telugu film of that year. Shruti received positive reviews for her role and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu. She also had a Tamil film called Poojai.

In 2015, Shruti appeared in five successful films. She played a lawyer in the Hindi film Gabbar Is Back with Akshay Kumar. This movie was a commercial success. She then starred in the Telugu film Srimanthudu with Mahesh Babu. This film was also a big success and earned her another SIIMA Best Actress award nomination. She also appeared in the Hindi film Welcome Back.

Shruti then starred in two Tamil films: Puli and Vedalam. Both films were successful at the box office.

In 2016, Shruti appeared in Rocky Handsome. She then played a lecturer in the Telugu film Premam. This film was a commercial success. Shruti had five film releases in 2021. She starred as Kalyani in the Telugu film Krack with Ravi Teja. This film was a big success. She also appeared in the Hindi film The Power. Later that year, she played Pawan Kalyan's wife in the Telugu film Vakeel Saab, which was also successful. Her final release that year was the Tamil film Laabam.

In 2022, Shruti made her Hindi web series debut in Bestseller. She played a character named Meenu, who wants to be a writer.

In 2023, Shruti starred in two of the highest-earning Telugu films of the year. She played a singer in Veera Simha Reddy and a RAW Agent in Waltair Veerayya. She also appeared in a song in Hi Nanna. Shruti then played a character named Aadhya in Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire with Prabhas. This film was a huge commercial success and the highest-earning Telugu film of 2023. That same year, Shruti also acted in her first English film, The Eye.

Music Career

Besides acting, Shruti Haasan is also a talented singer. She has sung many songs for films. She was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer – Tamil for "Kannazhaga Kaalazhaga" from 3 (2012). She was also nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer – Telugu for "Junction Lo" from Aagadu (2014). She has sung songs in Hindi films too, like "Aazma (Luck Is The Key)" for Luck and "Alvida" for D-Day.

Shruti started her music career as a music director for her father's film Unnaipol Oruvan (2009). She has also formed her own music band. She won the Best Music Director award for Unnaipol Oruvan at the Edison Awards.

Some of Shruti's well-known songs include: "Adiye Kolluthe" from Vaaranam Aayiram (2008), "Yellae Lama" from 7 Aum Arivu (2011), "Down Down" from Race Gurram (2014), and "Don't You Mess With Me" from Vedalam (2015). In 2023, she sang "Odiyamma" from Hi Nanna.

Personal Life and Other Work

Shruti Haasan was in a relationship with London-based actor Michael Corsale until 2019. From 2020 to 2024, she was in a relationship with visual artist Santanu Hazarika.

Shruti is involved in many social causes. She works with the RPG Foundation, which helps empower women. She also supported a campaign for the Jammu and Kashmir floods in 2014. She organized an online clothes sale to raise money for Bal Asha Trust in Mumbai. In 2019, she attended an art exhibition to raise funds for children at Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital. In 2014, she lent her voice to a digital campaign called TeachAIDS to spread awareness about AIDS.
