Early Life and Talents
Sid Haig was born in Fresno, California. His parents were from Armenia. When he was young, he grew very quickly, which made it a bit hard for him to move around easily. To help with this, he started taking dancing lessons. By the age of seven, he was already a paid dancer in a Christmas show for kids! Later, he joined a type of old-fashioned stage show called vaudeville.
Sid was also a talented musician. He played the drums and could play many different kinds of music, like swing, country, jazz, blues, and rock and roll. He even started earning money from his music. After high school, he signed a recording contract. When he was still a teenager, he recorded a song called "Full House" with his band, the T-Birds, in 1958. It became a hit, reaching number 4 on the music charts!
Learning to Act at Pasadena Playhouse
When Sid was in high school, his drama teacher, Alice Merrill, encouraged him to try acting. She had worked on Broadway and knew many people in the entertainment business. In his last year of high school, a famous musical comedy actor from the 1940s, Dennis Morgan, saw Sid perform. Dennis Morgan told Sid to keep studying acting.
Two years later, Sid went to the Pasadena Playhouse. This was a famous acting school where many well-known actors like Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman also studied. After finishing school, Sid moved to Hollywood with his friend and roommate, Stuart Margolin.
Acting Career Highlights
Sid Haig's first acting job was in a short student film in 1960 called The Host. This was the start of a long career that lasted over 40 years! He acted in more than 50 movies and appeared in 350 television shows. Sid often worked with director Jack Hill in movies like Spider Baby, Coffy, and Foxy Brown. In 1971, he was in THX 1138, which was the first movie directed by George Lucas (who later created Star Wars). He also appeared in a James Bond movie called Diamonds Are Forever.
Sid Haig also had many roles on television. His first TV appearance was in The Untouchables in 1962. He then appeared in many popular shows, including Batman, Star Trek, Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, Charlie's Angels, The Dukes of Hazzard, and MacGyver.
In 1992, Sid Haig decided to take a break from acting because he felt he was always being cast in the same kinds of roles. For five years, he didn't act. Instead, he trained and became a certified hypnotherapist, someone who helps people using hypnosis. He returned to acting in 1997 in the movie Jackie Brown, directed by Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino wrote the part specifically for Sid Haig!
Becoming a Horror Icon
In 2003, Sid Haig starred in director Rob Zombie's first movie, House of 1000 Corpses. He played a scary clown character named Captain Spaulding. This role brought Sid Haig a lot of attention and helped restart his acting career. He won an award for "Best Supporting Actor" and was even added to a "Horror Hall of Fame."
Sid played Captain Spaulding again in the 2005 movie The Devil's Rejects. Captain Spaulding became a very famous character in scary movies, and Sid Haig himself became known as a "horror icon." For his role in The Devil's Rejects, he won "Best Actor" and shared an award for "Most Vile Villain" with other actors who played the Firefly family.
Sid Haig continued to work with Rob Zombie. He appeared in Zombie's 2007 Halloween remake and voiced Captain Spaulding in the 2009 animated movie The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. He also acted in Zombie's 2013 film The Lords of Salem, as well as other movies like Hatchet III.
