Sign facts for kids

A sign is something you notice that tells you something else. You might see or hear a sign. Signs can be natural, like from Nature, or they can be made by people.
Natural signs happen all around us. For example, when leaves on trees turn brown and fall off in the autumn, it's a sign. It tells us that winter is getting close. Also, when the weather gets colder and days get shorter, it's a sign. Many birds fly to warmer places (migration) and some animals sleep through winter (Hibernation) because of these natural signs.
People also create their own signs. These are often called signals or symbols. People decide what these signs mean in their society.
For example, a stop sign on the road is a man-made sign. It tells a driver they must stop their car there. A red traffic light means the same thing. These are signals with a legal meaning. People learn what these signs mean as they grow up.
Sometimes, you might not know what a sign means right away. If you feel a cold wind inside, it could be a sign. It might mean someone left a door or window open.
In medicine, a sign is something a doctor can see or measure. For example, high blood pressure is a sign. A symptom is something a person feels, like a pain.
