History of Sillian

The land where Sillian is located was given to Innichen Abbey in the year 769. This gift was made by Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria. Sillian was first mentioned around the year 1000.

From the 1200s, the Meinhardiner counts of Gorizia owned the lands of Silano. The local church was officially opened in 1326. In 1469, Count Leonhard of Gorizia gave the people of Sillian special rights to hold a market.

When the Gorizia family line ended in 1500, Sillian was taken over by King Maximilian I of the House of Habsburg. It then became part of the County of Tyrol.

Before World War I, Sillian was a town where the Austro-Hungarian Army kept soldiers. After the 1919 Treaty of Saint Germain, Sillian became a border town. It was very close to the South Tyrol lands, which became part of the Italian kingdom.
