Sitting Ducks is a fun animated TV show for kids. It's based on a picture called "Sitting Ducks" from the 1970s and a children's book from 1998. Both were created by an artist named Michael Bedard.

The show first came out in Europe in 2001. Later, it was shown in the United States on Cartoon Network. It also aired in Australia on ABC3, in Canada on CBC Television, and in the United Kingdom on CITV.

Sitting Ducks had two seasons, with 13 episodes in each. The last episode aired on July 5, 2003. You could watch reruns on Qubo starting in 2007. All 26 episodes became available on Peacock (streaming service) on April 15, 2020.

Meet the Characters of Ducktown

The show takes place in a town called Ducktown. It's all about a duck named Bill and his best friend, Aldo. Aldo is an alligator from a nearby place called Swampwood. Bill and Aldo often find themselves in funny and exciting situations. They usually travel around on Bill's scooter.

Main Characters

  • Bill (Ian James Corlett) – Bill is a small, friendly duck. He is very kind and always helps his friends. One of his biggest dreams is to fly. He tries many times with his friend Dr. Cecil. Bill wears a bow tie, which he changes every year. He lives in an apartment with his pet parrot, Jerry. Bill is known for trying to make ducks and alligators friends.
  • Aldo (Dave Ward) – Aldo is a big, gentle alligator from Swampwood. He is Bill's best friend. Other alligators sometimes tease him for being friends with ducks. Aldo has a blind Uncle Artie and a baby cousin named Andy. He used to cook at a bowling ball factory. He stopped cooking ducks after he became friends with Bill. Aldo tries hard not to eat ducks.
  • Bev (Kathleen Barr) – Bev owns the Decoy Cafe, a popular spot where many ducks eat. She is a sweet duck. She also has a secret identity as Madam Bevousky. As Madam Bevousky, she tells fortunes for the people of Ducktown. Bill is interested in Bev romantically.
  • Ed, Oly, and Waddle (Louis Chirillo, Phil Hayes and Jay Brazeau) – These three brothers are Bill's friends and live next door. They are a bit silly and lazy. They often try to trick their way into things. They are usually behind pranks or plans. When things go wrong, they always try to pretend they weren't involved.
    • Ed wears a tropical shirt and speaks with a New York accent.
    • Oly wears a green beret and has soft feathers. He speaks with a "beatnik" accent.
    • Waddle is the shortest and fattest. He has a voice that sounds more like a child.
  • Cecil (Ian James Corlett) – Cecil is Ducktown's only dentist and also an inventor. He speaks with a British accent. Cecil always offers good advice to Bill and others. Aldo is usually his only patient because he is the only one in town with teeth. Cecil also helps ducks with their beaks.
  • Claire – Claire is Cecil's wife. At first, she was scared of alligators, just like Aldo was in the first episode.
  • Fred (Phil Hayes) – Fred is a sad, but sometimes very energetic, penguin. He moved to Ducktown from Antarctica. He might have moved to get away from killer whales and leopard seals. He is now a citizen of Ducktown. Fred is often a loner. He surrounds himself with ice or air conditioning to stay cool. He has a duck girlfriend named Dot Cable and a stylish cousin named Gelata.
  • Raoul (Michael Benyaer) – Raoul is a Hispanic crow. He often causes trouble in Ducktown and likes to argue with Bill. He especially enjoys making fun of Bill's attempts to fly.
  • Drill Sergeant Duck (Cathy Weseluck) – She is a tough police duck. She makes it hard for Aldo to enter Ducktown. She is also the leader of the Duck Defense League, a group against alligators.

Other Voices

Other characters in the show were voiced by many talented actors. These include Dale Wilson, Brian Dobson, Sylvia Zaradic, Chantal Strand, Chiara Zanni, Pauline Newstone, Paul Dobson, Lee Tockar, Garry Chalk, Jay Brazeau, and Scott McNeil.

Merchandise and Games

Sitting Ducks was very popular in Europe. Because of this, many toys, clothes, and other items were made.

Books

The cartoon also led to a couple of books. Quacking Up is a joke book by Rick Walton that features the characters. Plucked Duck is a children's picture book by Danielle Mentzer and Annmarie Harris. It is based on the episode "Duck Naked." Both books were released in 2004, about a year after the show ended.

Video Games

In May 2003, two companies, Light and Shadow Production and Asobo Studios, got the rights from Universal Studios to make Sitting Ducks games. In 2004, a Sitting Ducks video game was released. You could play it on Microsoft Windows computers, Game Boy Advance, and PlayStation 2. There were plans for an Xbox version with multiplayer racing, but it was never released.
