The Situation Room is a very important area in the West Wing basement of the White House. Many people think it's just one room, but it's actually a large space with several secure rooms for meetings and operations. It's about 5,000 square feet (465 square meters) in size.

Around 130 staff members from the National Security Council work here. They help the president of the United States, the chief of staff, and other top advisors. Their main job is to keep track of important events and crises around the world. They also help with secure phone calls and messages. The Situation Room has special, secure equipment. This helps the president stay in touch with U.S. forces globally.

The Situation Room has been updated many times. The most recent updates happened in late 2023.

Why was the Situation Room created?

The Situation Room was first set up in 1961. President John F. Kennedy ordered it to be built. This happened after a big event called the Bay of Pigs Invasion did not go well. One reason it failed was because leaders did not have the most current information.

So, the Situation Room was made to make sure this never happened again. It has very secure communication systems. The wood panels on the walls hide all the special audio and video equipment.

Who works in the Situation Room?

About 130 people work in the Situation Room. They are divided into different teams.

  • Watch Teams: There are five watch teams. They work all day and night, watching events happening in the U.S. and around the world.
  • Support Teams: Other teams help with travel support, video operations, and communication technology.

Each watch team usually has six duty officers, a communications assistant, and a senior intelligence analyst. These team members come from different U.S. intelligence agencies and the military. They are chosen very carefully and are not involved in politics. They work 24/7 to keep White House staff informed about important events. The current director of the Situation Room is Marc Gustafson.

The main job of the Situation Room is to give up-to-date information and help during crises. This support goes to the NSC staff, the national security advisor, and the president. It's a place where sensitive information comes in and goes out all the time.

It's also a key link when the president is traveling. It makes sure the president can get all the important information from Washington, D.C.

Daily Tasks

Each day starts with the watch team preparing the Morning Book. This book is for the president, vice president, and other senior staff. It includes important news and reports from different agencies. The national security advisor usually gets this book on the way to work.

Another important daily task is the President's Daily Brief. This is a secret report prepared by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. An intelligence officer delivers it to the president and other leaders. They also brief them on what's in the document.

The watch teams also create short summaries in the morning and evening. These summaries cover important topics and are sent to the NSC staff.

Keeping Leaders Informed

The Situation Room staff also sends out alerts when new events happen. The national security advisor is responsible for telling the president about these events. Later, a written "Sit Room Note" is made. This note summarizes the event with the latest reports. It might also include a photo, diagram, or map. The staff makes sure the president knows what's happening. They also make sure the president knows how the news media is reporting the situation.

Connecting with World Leaders

Another common activity is setting up phone calls for the president. These are calls with leaders from other countries. The Situation Room helps schedule these calls. They also provide interpreters if needed. They make sure the calls are secure and recorded properly. They work closely with the White House Communications Agency for this.

Updates and Renovations

The Situation Room has been updated several times to keep up with new technology.

2006–2007 Renovation

A big renovation happened between 2006 and 2007. Before this, the room used old-fashioned monitors and fax machines. The computers and phones were from the 1980s. The secure video equipment was not always reliable. Sometimes it would stop working during important calls. People described the old room as "uncomfortable" and "low-tech."

Planning for this renovation started even before the September 11, 2001, attacks. But the attacks made the project much more urgent.

The renovation started in August 2006. The entire complex was taken apart. The rebuilding took about four and a half months. It was a noisy process for those working above it! During the work, old parts of the White House were found. These included old cables and a window from the time of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

After the renovation, more groups could use the room. This included the Homeland Security Council and the office of the White House Chief of Staff. A secure direct connection to Air Force One was also added.

Special sensors were put in the ceilings. These sensors could detect cell phone signals. This was to stop people from using unauthorized phones or hidden listening devices. Before the renovation, the Secret Service had to take away cell phones.

The renovation was finished by mid-May 2007. President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair used the new room for a video conference. The next day, President Bush officially opened the newly updated Situation Room.

Two of the old rooms from the complex were saved. They are now on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and the George W. Bush Presidential Center.

2023 Renovation

The Situation Room complex was updated again in late 2023. This renovation cost $50 million and took a year. The walls were made with new, eco-friendly wood. New monitors were put into the walls. Faster computer servers, updated audio equipment, and new computers were also installed. New leather chairs replaced the old, worn furniture. White House staff helped choose the design for the new facility.

The walls, ceilings, and floors were designed in a special way. This makes it easy to get to the technology behind them. This will make future updates much simpler.
