The Situation Room is a special area in the West Wing basement of the White House. It's where important information is handled. Even though it's called a "room," it's actually a large suite of offices and meeting spaces, about 5,000 square feet (465 square meters).

This complex includes a main duty station and three secure meeting rooms. About 130 staff members from the National Security Council (NSC) work here. They help the president of the United States, the chief of staff, and other top advisors. Their job is to keep track of important events and emergencies. They also make sure secure messages can be sent to people outside the White House, often in other countries. The Situation Room has advanced communication tools. These allow the president to direct and manage U.S. forces around the world. The Situation Room has been updated several times, most recently in late 2023.

How the Situation Room Started

The idea of a "War Room" in the White House began with President William McKinley in 1898. This was during the Spanish–American War. Back then, it had telegraph systems and maps to help track events.

President John F. Kennedy created the modern Situation Room in 1961. He did this after a past event, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, showed that the White House needed better and faster information during important moments. The room has special secure communication systems. Wooden panels on the walls hide all the audio, video, and other equipment.

About 130 people work in the Situation Room. They are organized into five watch teams. These teams monitor events happening both in the U.S. and around the world. There are also travel support staff, video operators, and communication technicians.

Each watch team usually has six duty officers, a communications assistant, and a senior intelligence analyst. The exact number of people can change based on what's needed. These team members are carefully chosen from different intelligence agencies and the military. They are selected after a thorough review and do not favor any political party. They work 24 hours a day, every day. Their job is to watch world events and keep top White House staff informed about anything important. The current director of the Situation Room is Marc Gustafson.

What the Situation Room Does

The main goal of the Situation Room is to give up-to-date information and help during emergencies. This support goes to the NSC staff, the national security advisor, and the president. It's a place where sensitive information is shared around the clock.

It's also the main way most communications, especially secret information, pass through when the president is away. This link is vital, giving the traveling White House access to all important information from Washington.

Each day starts with the watch team preparing the "Morning Book." This book is for the president, vice president, and other senior White House staff. It contains important daily reports, diplomatic messages, and intelligence updates. The national security advisor usually receives this book on their way to work. Another important daily task is the President's Daily Brief. This is a daily report with the most important secret information. An intelligence officer delivers and explains it to the president and other top advisors.

The Watch Teams also create morning and evening summaries of important topics. These summaries are sent electronically to the NSC staff.

The Situation Room staff also sends alerts about new events to White House personnel. The national security advisor is responsible for informing the president. Later, a written "Sit Room Note" is prepared. This note summarizes the event with current reports, sometimes including a photo or map. The staff makes sure the president knows what's happening and how the news media is reporting it.

Another key activity is arranging the president's phone calls with leaders of other countries. This includes scheduling calls, providing interpreters if needed, and ensuring security and proper record-keeping. The Situation Room works closely with the White House Communications Agency for these tasks.

Keeping the Room Modern: Renovations

The Situation Room has been updated several times to keep up with technology.

The 2006-2007 Upgrade

The first major renovation happened in 2006 and 2007. Before this, the room used old-fashioned TV screens, fax machines, and computers from the mid-1980s. The room even had a tiny kitchen without a sink. The secure audio and video equipment was often unreliable. Sometimes it would stop working, which could upset the president. People described the room before the renovation as "uncomfortable" and "very old and not modern."

Planning for this renovation began before the September 11, 2001, attacks. The project became even more urgent after those events.

The renovation started in August 2006. The Situation Room complex was completely emptied. Rebuilding took about four and a half months. It was quite noisy for staff, especially for the White House chief of staff, whose office was right above it. During the work, old items were found, like old wires and a window frame from President Franklin D. Roosevelt's time.

The upgrades allowed more groups to use the room, including the Homeland Security Council and the White House chief of staff's office. A secure direct connection to Air Force One, the president's plane, was also added.

Sensors were installed in the ceilings to detect phone signals. This was to prevent unauthorized communications or anyone secretly listening in with mobile phones or other devices. Before the renovation, the Secret Service could only confiscate phones.

The renovation was officially finished by mid-May 2007. On May 17, 2007, President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair used the new room for a video conference. The next day, President Bush officially opened the refurbished Situation Room.

Two of the old rooms from the complex were saved. They are now on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and the George W. Bush Presidential Center.

The 2023 Modernization

The Situation Room complex received another upgrade in late 2023. This year-long renovation cost $50 million. Marc Gustafson led this project. The new design included walls made with wood from sustainably managed forests. New monitors were installed into the walls. Faster computer servers, updated audio equipment, and new computers were also part of the upgrade. New leather chairs replaced the old furniture in each room. White House staff members were able to share their ideas for the new design.

The walls, ceilings, and floors were redesigned with a modular system. This means they are made of parts that can be easily accessed. This will make future renovations much simpler.
