Six Lakes Community
Six Lakes is a small, unincorporated community in the middle of Belvidere Township. It is located where two main roads, M-46 and M-66, meet.
History of Six Lakes
The first planned village in the township was called "Sumnerville." It was started by L. C. Sumner in 1873. Sumnerville was about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of where Six Lakes is now.
Sumnerville began to grow, but then a railroad was built. This railroad, which later became part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, had a station closer to the Flat River. Because of this, Mr. Sumner sold his land and moved away.
In 1876, Hiram Clark and Dr. J. B. Daniels bought land near the new train station. They planned out the community of "Six Lakes" on May 13, 1876. A post office was opened in Six Lakes on December 20, 1878.
