Skellefteå Municipality (which is Skellefteå kommun in Swedish) is a special area in northern Sweden. It is located in Västerbotten County. The main town and where the local government is based is called Skellefteå.

History of Skellefteå
The municipality we know today was formed over many years. Most of the smaller areas joined together in 1967. At that time, the "City of Skellefteå" merged with nearby rural areas. These included Jörn, Bureå, and Byske.
In 1971, the larger city became a single municipality. Then, in 1974, two more areas, Burträsk and Lövånger, also joined. This created the Skellefteå Municipality as it is now.
Geography of Skellefteå
Skellefteå Municipality is in northern Sweden. It shares borders with several other municipalities. To the south, it borders Robertsfors Municipality. Clockwise from there, it borders Umeå, Vindeln, Norsjö, Arvidsjaur, and Piteå.
Skellefteå is the largest municipality along the coast in terms of land area. It is about 15% bigger than the next largest, Örnsköldsvik Municipality. The main town of Skellefteå is built around the Skellefte River. This river flows right through the city. There is also a mountain called Vitberget. It is popular for skiing in winter and hiking in summer.
