History of Skiing in Victoria

Skiing in Victoria has a long and interesting history. Around 1863, a special building called a hospice was built at Mount Saint Bernard (1540 meters high). This building was along a path that connected the gold mining areas in Victoria. People even made their own snowshoes to help them travel in winter! A bigger hospice was built around 1884.

People started skiing for fun and to get around in the 1880s and 1890s. They used skis made from local wood and a single pole to help them steer. In 1900, people completed the first winter trip across the Victorian Alps, passing by the hospice and Mount Hotham. The hospice was used as a fun ski spot until the 1930s, but it was sadly destroyed by a bushfire in 1939.

Early Skiing at Mount Buffalo

Skiing began at Mount Buffalo in the 1890s. The famous Mount Buffalo Chalet was built in 1910. Australia's first ski tow was built near Mount Buffalo in 1938. The first ski lodge at Buffalo, called Dingo Dell, was built in 1954. A big bushfire in 2006 caused the resort to close for a while.

Growth of Victorian Ski Resorts

At Mount Hotham, a stone cottage was built in 1925 for people who loved skiing. A ski club was built in 1944, and the first ski tow was put in place in 1951. A ski hut was set up at Mount Baw Baw in 1945, which is only about 120 kilometers east of Melbourne. A ski rope tow was added there in 1955.

The first ski lift at Mount Buller started working in 1949. In the same year, a rope tow was installed at Falls Creek. In 1957, Australia's very first chairlift was built at Falls Creek. Today, Falls Creek is the biggest ski resort in Victoria!

The Mount Buller Interschools Event is a huge snow-sports competition. It claims to be the largest event of its kind in the world! In 2008, over 3500 people took part in it.
