Sky Brown, born on July 7, 2008, is a super talented British-Japanese professional skateboarder and surfer. She competes for Great Britain and is known for being one of the youngest professional skateboarders in the world! Sky has achieved amazing things, including winning the American TV show Dancing with the Stars: Juniors.

She has won two bronze medals in park skateboarding at the 2020 Summer Olympics (held in 2021) and the 2024 Summer Olympics. This made her Great Britain's youngest-ever Olympic medallist! Sky also won gold medals at the World Skateboarding Championship in 2023 and 2025.

Sky Brown's Early Life

Sky Brown was born in Miyazaki, Japan. Her mother, Mieko, is Japanese, and her father, Stuart, is British. She has a younger brother named Ocean Brown. Sky's Japanese name can be written in different ways, like スカイ (Sukai) in katakana or 澄海 (Sukai) in kanji.

Her father lived in the United States before moving to Japan. Sky lives in Miyazaki but spends about half the year in the US. Her whole family loves skateboarding! Her preschool even had a skate park. Since there aren't many skate parks near her home in Takanabe, Miyazaki, she has her own skating ramp in her backyard. Besides skateboarding, Sky also loves to surf.

Sky Brown's Skateboarding Journey

Sky doesn't have a skateboarding coach. Instead, she learns cool new tricks by watching videos on YouTube. Sometimes, she even practices with Shaun White, a famous Olympic snowboarding champion!

First Competitions (2016–2017)

In 2016, when she was just 8 years old, Sky became the youngest person ever to compete in the Vans US Open. She showed great courage even though she had a fall during the event. In 2017, she earned second place in the Asian Continental Finals. She also placed in the top 10 at the 2018 Vans Park Series.

Becoming a Professional (2018)

At the age of 10 in 2018, Sky became a professional athlete. This made her the youngest professional skateboarder in the world! That same year, she won the US TV show Dancing with the Stars: Juniors, showing off her dancing skills too.

Joining Team GB (2019)

In February 2019, Sky won the Simple Session event in Tallinn, Estonia. In March 2019, Sky decided to compete for Great Britain. She felt that the British Skateboarding Association had a "more relaxed approach" that she liked. She was one of five British athletes who received special funding to help them qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics. This was a big deal because it was the first time skateboarding was included in the Olympic Games!

Later in 2019, Sky won a bronze medal in the park event at the World Skateboarding Championship in São Paulo. She also made history at the X Games by being the first female to land a difficult trick called a frontside 540. She finished 5th in the X Games skateboarding event that year.

Overcoming Challenges (2020)

In May 2020, Sky had a very serious fall while practicing on a halfpipe ramp in California. She was badly hurt, but she showed amazing strength and determination to recover. Even after this tough experience, she was still focused on pushing her limits and competing for gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Her incredible spirit helped her get back on her board!

Olympic Medals and X Games Gold (2021)

In July 2021, Sky won a gold medal in the women's skateboarding park event at the X Games. She then represented Great Britain in skateboarding at the 2020 Summer Olympics in August 2021 (which were delayed due to the pandemic). At 13 years old, Sky became the youngest British Summer Olympian ever!

Sky won the bronze medal in the women's park skateboarding event at the 2020 Summer Olympics. This made her Great Britain’s youngest-ever Olympic medal winner. She showed incredible resilience, landing a great score on her final attempt after falling in her first two runs. She wasn't the youngest medallist overall, as 12-year-old Cocona Hiraki from Japan won silver in the same event. Towards the end of 2021, some of Sky's skateboards were chosen to be displayed at the Young V&A museum in London.

World Champion (2022–2023)

In 2022, Sky continued her winning streak by keeping her X Games title. She also won the Dew Tour event for the second year in a row. In 2023, she won the park event at the World Skateboarding Championship, becoming the first British skateboarding world champion!

Another Olympic Bronze (2024)

In June 2024, Sky qualified for the park event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. She was part of a special team that included 2022 British Champion Lola Tambling and 22-time Summer X Games medallist Andy Macdonald. It was interesting because both Sky and Lola were 16, while Andy was 51 years old, showing that skateboarding is for all ages! Sky went on to win her second Olympic bronze medal in Paris.

Surfing Adventures

In April 2021, Sky mentioned that she was thinking about trying to compete in surfing at the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics. However, she ended up focusing only on skateboarding for those Games. In March 2024, she competed in the ISA World Surfing Games in Puerto Rico. She hoped to qualify for surfing at the 2024 Summer Olympics, but she didn't quite make it. Still, she finished an impressive 17th out of 113 female surfers and was the highest-ranked British athlete there!

Awards and Recognition

On December 19, 2021, Sky won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award. She was also nominated for this award again in 2022 and 2024. In April 2022, she received the Comeback of the Year award at the Laureus World Sports Awards for her amazing recovery in 2021.

Sponsorships

In 2019, Sky became the youngest athlete ever to be sponsored by Nike. She has even appeared in a Nike campaign alongside famous athletes like Serena Williams and Simone Biles. She also gets support from Almost Skateboards and Skateistan, which helps kids through skateboarding.
