Sommeri is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the Arbon area, which is part of the canton of Thurgau.

Discovering Sommeri's Past

Sommeri became one town in 1967. Before that, it was two separate areas called Niedersommeri and Obersommeri. The name Sumbrinaro was first used for this place way back in 905.

Early History and Church Life

From 1474 to 1798, the areas of Niedersommeri and Obersommeri were managed by a special court. This court was under the control of the Prince-Abbot of St. Gall.

The Church of St. Mauritius was officially opened in 1474. It was updated to look as it does today in the early 1400s. After the Protestant Reformation arrived in Sommeri in 1528, the church became a shared church in 1534. This meant both Protestants and Catholics could use it.

How Sommeri Grew Economically

In the beginning, people in Sommeri mostly grew grain and worked in forestry. In the late 1800s, they started growing fruit, making hay, and raising cattle for milk. A cheese factory even opened in 1852!

Later, in the late 1900s, some factories moved into the villages. These included companies that made embroidery and furniture. By the early 2000s, Sommeri had businesses that worked with heating and cooling systems, made very precise parts, and even produced furniture for schools.
