Sonceboz-Sombeval is a town in Switzerland. It is located in the Jura bernois area of the canton of Bern. This region is known for speaking French.

A Look Back: The History of Sonceboz-Sombeval

Sonceboz-Sombeval has a long and interesting past. It was first mentioned way back in 866 with the name Summavallis. Later, in 1179, it was called Sommeval, and by 1303, it was known as Suntzelbo.

Ancient Roots: Roman Times and Beyond

The town's location was very important because it was at the foot of the Pierre Pertuis pass. This pass has been used for travel since the time of the Roman Empire. A Roman road, called the Petinesca road, even ran near Sonceboz.

Archaeologists have found the remains of a Roman settlement from the 4th century on a ridge called Le Châtillon. After the Roman Empire ended, a new village grew right on top of this old Roman site.

Changes Over the Centuries

In 999, a powerful church group, Moutier-Grandval Abbey, gave some local farms and a chapel to the Prince-Bishop of Basel. This meant the church had a lot of control over the village.

Later, in 1530, the people of Sonceboz and Sombeval decided to join the Protestant Reformation. This was a big change in their religious beliefs. After this, the villages were managed by a different local government called Erguel.

Becoming Part of Switzerland

Big changes happened when France won a war in 1797. Sonceboz-Sombeval became part of a French area called Mont-Terrible. Then, in 1800, it moved to another French area, Haut-Rhin.

After Napoleon was defeated, European leaders met at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. They decided that Sonceboz-Sombeval would become part of the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Growth and Industry

For a long time, Sonceboz was just a small group of houses, while Sombeval was the larger village. But in the early 1700s, Sonceboz became an important stop for traders using the pass.

A major change came in 1849 with the growth of the watch parts industry. This brought many workers to the villages, making them grow. In 1874, new railway lines opened, connecting Sonceboz to other towns like Biel and Tavannes. This made Sonceboz grow even faster, with more people and factories.

As Sonceboz and Sombeval grew, they eventually joined together to form one larger town. In 1936, a company called Société industrielle de Sonceboz built a factory there to make watch parts. Later, in 1978, a company called Bienna SA built a factory for flooring. By 2005, most jobs in the town were in manufacturing, showing how important industry became.
