Sorrento Valley is a neighborhood in San Diego, California. It is located between two major highways, Interstate 5 and Interstate 805. To the north, you'll find the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, a beautiful nature area. To the south is Miramar Road.
Even though it was first planned for factories and businesses, Sorrento Valley is now home to over 5,000 people. They live in houses and condominium buildings. This area is famous for its many high-tech, biotech, and science research companies. This is partly because it's very close to the University of California, San Diego. Sorrento Valley is part of several community planning areas in San Diego, including Mira Mesa and Torrey Pines.

History of Sorrento Valley
The Ancient Kumeyaay Village of Ystagua
Long before Europeans arrived, Sorrento Valley was home to a Kumeyaay village. This village was called Ystagua, which means 'worm's house' in the Kumeyaay language. People lived here for a very long time, starting as early as 1800 BCE. Around the year 1700, about 200 people lived in Ystagua.
The village of Ystagua was an important place for making tools, processing food, and trading. The people had easy access to shellfish, fish, wild animals, and different types of wild grasses. The area where tools were made was east of what is now Sorrento Valley Road. The homes were mostly west of the road, near Roselle Street.
In 1769, the Gaspar de Portolá expedition visited the valley. They saw that the land was good for farming. The Spanish missionaries later called the area Ranchería de la Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. By 1800, the population of Ystagua had dropped to about 100 people. This was due to European diseases spreading in the area.
How Sorrento Valley Became a Modern Neighborhood
In the 1880s, the California Southern Railroad was built through the valley. This railroad connected National City and San Bernardino. Many Chinese laborers, who had worked on other railroads, helped build it.
In 1912, during a time of protests in San Diego, some people were taken to Sorrento Valley. These events were part of the San Diego free speech fight.
The construction of I-5 in the 1960s and 1970s brought new businesses to the area. This helped Sorrento Valley become a major center for biotech and information technology (IT) companies.
Economy and Companies
Sorrento Valley is a hub for many high-tech, biotech, and IT companies. Some well-known companies here include Qualcomm, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Verizon, Google Inc., Texas Instruments, and Forcepoint. Other important companies are Hologic, Dexcom, and NuVasive.
In 2011, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced plans to build a large office here. The building, costing $100 million, opened in May 2013. It houses 400 special agents and support staff.
Karl Strauss Brewing Company, a company that makes craft beer, also has a location in Sorrento Valley.

Transportation
The western part of Sorrento Valley is where I-5 and I-805 meet. This is a very busy highway interchange. The Sorrento Valley station is a stop for two train lines: the Coaster commuter train and the Pacific Surfliner. These trains connect Sorrento Valley to places like Oceanside and Downtown San Diego.
