Ku-ring-gai area

South Turramurra is a lovely suburb located on the Upper North Shore of Sydney, a big city in New South Wales, Australia. It's about 18 kilometers north-west of the main part of Sydney, called the Sydney CBD. This area is managed by the Ku-ring-gai Council. It's good to know that Turramurra and North Turramurra are separate suburbs nearby.

South Turramurra is a very green suburb. It is surrounded by the beautiful Lane Cove National Park. You can find many walking trails here, including parts of the famous Great North Walk. These trails also connect to nearby suburbs like North Epping, Marsfield, and West Pymble.

A Look Back: South Turramurra's History

The name "Turramurra" comes from an Aboriginal word. People think it means "big hill," "high place," or "small watercourse." Long ago, early settlers called this area "Eastern Road." The name Turramurra was officially adopted when the railway station was built in 1897.

In the early 1990s, a group called the Coalition Against Lane Cove Valley Freeways was formed. They worked to stop plans for a new road that would connect the M2 motorway to the Pacific Highway.

South Turramurra officially became its own separate suburb on August 5, 1994. Before that, it was part of Turramurra.

In 2021, a count of the population (called a census) showed that 3,208 people lived in South Turramurra. Here's what we learned about them:

Getting Around South Turramurra

The closest train station is Turramurra Station. You can catch a CDC NSW bus, route 571, which travels between Turramurra station and South Turramurra along Kissing Point Road. Bus route 572 follows the same path but continues on to Macquarie University.

The Comenarra Parkway is a smaller main road that helps mark the boundary of South Turramurra. It separates it from Turramurra to the north and West Pymble to the south.

Shops and Services

The main shopping area in South Turramurra is called the South Turramurra Shopping Village. You can find it at the corner of Auluba Road and Kissing Point Road.

Schools in the Area

• Turramurra High School is located on Maxwell Street.
• Turramurra Public School is on the south side of Turramurra. Even though it's close, it's technically in Turramurra, not South Turramurra.

Parks and Green Spaces

South Turramurra is surrounded on three sides by the beautiful Lane Cove National Park. This means lots of nature is right on its doorstep!

• Field of Dreams: You can find this park on Kissing Point Road near Vernon Street.
• Sir David Martin Oval (Auluba Oval): This oval is on Auluba Road and is the home ground for the Kissing Point Sports Club.
• Netball Courts: There are netball courts located on Canoon Road.

Community Spirit

The people of South Turramurra have a strong community spirit. Their efforts to protect the bushland led to it becoming part of the Lane Cove River National Park. Many community groups were formed to work with the government on these issues. For example, the environmental group STEP Inc. started in South Turramurra in 1978. It has grown to be a very important group for protecting the environment in northern Sydney.

The 1st Turramurra Scout Group is a fun place for young people. It's part of Scouts Australia and has programs for different age groups:

• Cub Scouts: For boys and girls aged 8–11.
• Scouts: For ages 11–15.
• Venturer Scouts: For young men and women aged 15–17.
• Rovers: For young adults aged 18–25.

The Turramurra and Kissing Point Rover Scout Crews are also active groups. They are for young people aged 18-25 who enjoy outdoor activities, social events, and helping their community.

South Turramurra also has several churches and religious temples. Some of these have youth groups for children aged 5–18 years old, offering activities and support.
