Southlake's History
People first settled in the Southlake area in the 1840s. But it wasn't officially a town until 1956. This happened four years after Grapevine Lake was finished. Before 1956, the area was made up of smaller settlements. These included Whites Chapel, Dove, Union Church, and Jellico.
In 1956, a nearby town called Hurst wanted to take over the Southlake area. But on September 25, 1956, residents voted to form their own town. Anthony Gail Eubanks became the first mayor. His daughter picked the name "Southlake" because it was close to the new Grapevine Lake. The area stayed mostly rural until the DFW International Airport opened in the 1970s. Because it was so close to the airport, Southlake grew very quickly. It became a "boomburb" (a fast-growing suburb) in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.
