Soyhières is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Jura canton in Switzerland. It's part of the Delémont district.

A Look Back in Time

Soyhières has a long history! The first time it was ever written about was in the year 1102. Back then, it was called Sougere.

Later, its name changed a few times. In 1136, people called it Sohires, and by 1212, it was known as Sogron. For a while, it also had a German name, Saugern, but that name is not used anymore.

Where is Soyhières?

Soyhières covers an area of about 7.55 square kilometers (about 2.9 square miles). A large part of this land, about 61.7%, is covered by forests. About 30% of the land is used for farming.

A smaller part, about 7.5%, has buildings and roads. Very small parts are rivers or unproductive land. The town is located by the Birs river. It includes the main village of Soyhières and a smaller community called Les Riedes-Dessus.

Two sections are red and show a white hare jumping. The other two sections are blue and show a white wing.

People of Soyhières

Soyhières has a population of about 486 people. In 2008, about 15.3% of the people living here were from other countries. Over ten years, from 2000 to 2010, the number of people in the town went down a little.

Most people in Soyhières speak French, which is about 77.4% of the population. The second most common language is German, spoken by about 17.2% of the people. A smaller group, about 2.2%, speaks Italian.

In 2008, the population was almost evenly split between males (48.4%) and females (51.6%). Many people living in Soyhières were also born there or in the same canton.

About 31.6% of the population in 2000 were children and teenagers (0-19 years old). Adults (20-64 years old) made up 54.4%, and seniors (over 64 years old) were about 14%.

There are also people who belong to other Christian churches. A small number of people are Islamic. About 4.2% of the population said they did not belong to any church.

Learning and Education

In Soyhières, about 30.2% of the people have finished upper secondary education, which is like high school. About 7.6% have gone on to higher education, like a university.

The school system in the Canton of Jura works like this:

  • First, there are two years of optional Kindergarten.
  • Then, students go to six years of Primary school.
  • After that, there are three years of lower Secondary school. Students are grouped based on their abilities.
  • Finally, students can choose to go to an upper Secondary school for three or four years, or they can start an apprenticeship to learn a trade.

In the 2009-2010 school year, no students were attending school directly in Soyhières. However, many students from Soyhières attended schools in nearby towns.
