Springfield is a city located in Brown County, Minnesota, United States. It is a smaller city, with a population of 2,027 people recorded in the 2020 census.
A major road, U.S. Highway 14, runs through Springfield. The city is surrounded by some of Minnesota's best farmland. For many years, Springfield was home to Minnesota's only brick-making factory. This factory closed in 2016.

History of Springfield
How Springfield Got Its Name
The area that is now Springfield was first planned out in 1877. It was originally called "Burns." This happened when the Chicago and North Western Railway built a train line to the settlement.
In 1881, the town's name was changed to Springfield. It might have been named after Springfield, Massachusetts. Another idea is that it was named after a nearby natural spring.
Early Businesses and Growth
In 1890, a man named Adolph Casimir Ochs started the Ochs Brick and Tile Company. This company made bricks and tiles in Springfield and another town called Heron Lake. The company is still in business today. The Sanborn Company also continues to operate in Springfield.
Community and Transportation
Springfield has several churches, including three Lutheran churches, a Catholic church, and a United Methodist church. The town still has active train service. The Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad, which is part of the Canadian Pacific railway, uses these tracks.
About 12 miles south of Springfield, you can visit the Jeffers Petroglyphs State Park. This park has ancient rock carvings made by early people.
Geography and Location
Springfield covers a total area of about 1.85 square miles (4.8 square kilometers). All of this area is land. The Cottonwood River flows right through the city, adding to its natural beauty.
