History of St. Albans
St. Albans was first planned out in 1816. It had a few different names over the years. At first, it was called Philippi, named after an early settler, Philip Thompson. Later, its name changed to Colesmouth. This was because Samuel Cole discovered the area and the river.
In 1868, the town officially became a city, known as Kanawha City. This process is called incorporation. The name changed again in 1872. H.C. Parsons of the C & O Railroad renamed it St. Albans. He chose this name to honor his hometown in St. Albans, Vermont. That town was named after St. Albans in Hertfordshire, England. The English town is named for St. Alban, who is believed to be the first Christian martyr in Britain.
