St Luke's Church is a beautiful old church located in the village of Winmarleigh, Lancashire, England. It's a busy parish church, meaning it's a local church for the community. It's part of the Diocese of Blackburn, which is a larger church area. The church was built a long time ago, between 1875 and 1876, by famous architects named Paley and Austin. It's also a special building because it's listed as a Grade II building, which means it's important for its history and design.

History of St Luke's Church

Winmarleigh is a small village in Lancashire. Long ago, people from Winmarleigh went to church in a nearby village called Churchtown. They worshipped at St Helen's.

St Luke's Church was built especially for Winmarleigh villagers. It was built from 1875 to 1876. The architects were a well-known firm from Lancaster called Paley and Austin.

The church was paid for by a rich man named Lord Winmarleigh. In 1887, the same architects made the church bigger. They added a north aisle (a side part of the church) and a vestry (a room for the clergy).

What the Church Looks Like

St Luke's Church is built from sandstone rocks. Its roof is made of red tiles. The church has a main area called the nave and a special area near the altar called the chancel.

There's also a porch on the south side. On the north side, there's a small chapel and a vestry. The church does not have a tall tower. Instead, it has a wooden bell-cote with a small spire on top. This bell-cote is located between the nave and the chancel.

The church's design mixes two old styles of architecture. These are called Decorated and Perpendicular styles.

Outside the Church

In the churchyard, which is the area around the church, there is a special building. It's a mausoleum for the Reddaway family, who lived at Winmarleigh Hall. A mausoleum is a building that holds the graves of family members.

This mausoleum was built in 1927. It has a cross and a figure of someone kneeling. These are made from white marble. The churchyard also has a grave for a soldier from World War I. This soldier was part of the King's Liverpool Regiment.

St Luke's Church Today

St Luke's Church is a very important building. It was officially named a Grade II listed building on July 26, 1951. This means it's protected because of its special history and design.

The church is still an active parish church. It belongs to the Anglican Diocese of Blackburn. This diocese is part of the Province of York. St Luke's is also part of the Lancaster and Morecambe area.

The church serves the parish of Winmarleigh St Luke. It works together with churches in Cockerham and Glasson.
