A Look at Stanhope's History
The story of Stanhope Gardens began a long time ago. In 1801, a man named John Hillas arrived in Australia. He received land grants, which are like official gifts of land. One of these, given in 1804, was 150 acres. He called it "Stanhope Farm." John Hillas also opened an inn called the Stanhope Arms. This inn helped travellers going between the Macquarie Towns and Parramatta.
Later, by 1856, the Pearce family owned Stanhope Farm. In 1928, Jack Peel bought the farm and renamed it Stanhope Park Dairy.
In 1973, the New South Wales Housing Commission took over Stanhope Park Dairy. This was done to help develop the area.
The name "Stanhope Gardens" comes from these early properties. The Stanhope Gardens Estate officially opened in 1995. It became a recognised suburb in 1996.
When the area was first being planned, it had different names like Irish Town, Kellyville, and Parklea. But people living there wanted to keep "Stanhope" in the name. So, it became Stanhope Gardens.
A big part of the suburb is now the Newbury Estate. This was a carefully planned community started in 1999. It has 1,761 homes. These homes are divided into seven smaller communities. Each community has its own clubhouse, tennis court, pool, spa, and BBQ area!
