Stoke Mandeville is a village in Buckinghamshire, England. It is a small community located in the beautiful Vale of Aylesbury. The village is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the larger town of Aylesbury. It is also close to the market town of Wendover.

Stoke Mandeville is famous for its connection to the Paralympics. The Stoke Mandeville Hospital, though located in Aylesbury, is named after the village. This hospital has the largest ward in Europe for people with spinal injuries. It is known worldwide as the place where the Paralympic movement began.

The first Stoke Mandeville Games were held at the hospital in 1948. They were started by Sir Ludwig Guttmann. These games grew into the first official Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960. The hospital and stadium also helped host the 1984 Summer Paralympics with New York. The wheelchair events took place here.

The Paralympic mascot for the 2012 London Games was named Mandeville. This name honored Stoke Mandeville Stadium.

History of Stoke Mandeville

The village was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It was called Stoches, which meant a small farm or village. The name "Mandeville" was added later, around 1284. This came from the powerful Norman de Mandeville family, who owned land here.

Discoveries at the Old Church Site

The old village church, St Mary the Virgin, used to stand by itself. It was on a wet piece of land about 1 kilometer from the old village. People wondered why it was built there. Some thought a Roman tomb might have been there before the church.

The old church was taken down in 1966. This happened because it was no longer safe. In 2018, archaeologists started digging at the site. This was to prepare for the new HS2 railway. They carefully moved the remains of people buried there since 1080.

In 2021, archaeologists found exciting things at the church site. They discovered what might be a square foundation with a circular ditch. This area contained burials and two amazing Roman statues! In 2022, the BBC show Digging for Britain featured these important Roman finds.

Newer Churches and Village Sign

The newer church, also called St Mary, was opened in 1866. It is made of red brick. This church is still the main one in the village. There is also a Methodist church nearby.

In 2000, a new village sign was put up. It stands on a small brick base near the primary school. The sign shows colorful pictures of village life through the years.
