Stowe Mountain Resort is a super fun ski resort located in the northeastern United States. It's near the town of Stowe in northern Vermont. This resort is special because it has two mountains for skiing: Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. Mount Mansfield has a big drop of 2,360 feet for skiing. This makes it one of the biggest ski drops in New England!

The History of Stowe Mountain Resort

How Skiing Started in Vermont

Alpine skiing first came to Vermont thanks to the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This group helped cut the very first ski trails on Mount Mansfield in 1933. Imagine, they were building paths for skiing almost 100 years ago!

The Oldest Ski Patrol

The National Ski Patrol helps keep skiers safe all over the country. This important group actually started from the Mount Mansfield Ski Patrol. It was founded in 1934, making it the oldest ski patrol in the entire nation!

Who Owned Stowe Mountain Resort?

For a long time, the Mount Mansfield Company owned Stowe Mountain Resort. An insurance company founder named C.V. Starr bought it in 1949. Later, a big company called AIG became the main owner in 1988.

In 2017, AIG sold the ski parts of the resort to Vail Resorts. Vail Resorts now runs all the skiing and lift operations. AIG still owns other parts of the resort, like the Stowe Mountain Lodge and some land.

Snow and Mountains

Stowe Mountain Resort gets a lot of snow! The top of the mountain usually gets about 314 inches of snow each year. That's almost 26 feet of snow, perfect for skiing!

The ski area is made up of two mountains: Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. Together, they have 116 trails for skiing. This means there are 40 miles of trails, covering 485 acres of land.

New Lifts for Faster Fun

To make skiing even better, Stowe Mountain Resort often updates its equipment. Before the 2011–2012 ski season, they replaced an old high-speed chairlift. They put in a brand new, super-fast chairlift to get skiers up the mountain quicker.
