Suman Pokhrel (born September 21, 1967) is a famous Nepali poet, songwriter, play writer, translator, and artist. His poems are so good that they are even taught in universities in Nepal and India!
Suman Pokhrel is super special because he's the only writer to win the SAARC Literary Award twice, in 2013 and 2015. He has also won many other awards from Nepal and around the world, like the Shaluk International Literature Award and the Asia's Inspiring Poet Award.

Early Life and Family
Suman Pokhrel was born on September 21, 1967, in Mills Area, Biratnagar, Nepal. His parents are Mukunda Prasad Pokhrel and Bhakta Devi Pokhrel.
He went to kindergarten in Biratnagar until he was five. At age seven, he moved to his family's village, Kachide, in Dhankuta. His grandmother raised him there.
His paternal grandfather, Bidhyanath Pokhrel, was a poet and a politician. Suman learned about literature early from his grandfather's library. It was full of books in Nepali, Hindi, and classic Sanskrit languages.
When he was twelve, he moved back to Biratnagar to live with his parents. His father, an engineer, loved books and art. He helped Suman learn and grow in his love for literature.
Education and Career
Suman Pokhrel studied at Tribhuvan University in Nepal. He earned degrees in Science (BSc), Business (MBA), and Law (BL).
In 1995, he started working for the Nepali government. But in 1998, he decided to work as a development activist for Plan International. This job took him to very remote, hilly parts of Nepal.
Writing in Many Languages
Suman Pokhrel is a poet who writes in many languages. He writes in Nepali, English, Hindi, and Urdu. His works have been translated into many other languages. They are published in magazines and journals worldwide. He has even translated some of his own works.
He has shared his poems with people all over the world. He read his poems at many SAARC Literature Festivals. He also read his poems at events in India, Kazakhstan, and Bangladesh.
His Works
Suman Pokhrel published his first book of poems, Shoonya Mutuko Dhadkanbhitra, in 1999. Later, he released Hazaar Aankhaa Yee Aankhaa Maa in 2003. Jeevanko Chheubaata came out in 2009 and was re-released in 2018.
In 2016, he published two more books. Soundaryako Sangeet has Ghazals, which are a type of poem. Malai Zindaginai Dukhdachha contains his song lyrics.
Music and Plays
Suman Pokhrel started recording his songs in 1999. Many of his songs have music by Bednidhi Poudel. Some popular songs include Aaaja Yo Andhyarole and Dharti Aakash Bhanda Para. Two music albums with his lyrics, Bhitra Kahan Kahan and Yo Ke Bhayo?, were released in 2017 and 2019.
In 2016, he wrote a play called Yajnaseni. This play is based on the ancient Sanskrit story, The Mahabharata. It was first performed in Irving, Texas, USA. His lyrics were also used in a performance called The Unheard Plea in New York in 2018.
Translations
Suman Pokhrel's poems have been translated into many languages. These include Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi, and Spanish. This has helped more people around the world read his work.
He also translates works by other writers into Nepali. For example, he translated William Shakespeare's play The Tempest into Nepali as Aandhibehari. He has translated poems by famous poets like Pablo Neruda and Sylvia Plath.
He has also translated works by many Nepali writers into English, Hindi, and Urdu. This helps Nepali literature reach a wider audience.
From 2019 to 2022, Suman Pokhrel directed a series called Kavyaarohan. This project featured important Nepali poets.

Awards and Recognition
Suman Pokhrel's poetry is known and loved by many people. His work is shared widely on social media like Instagram and Facebook. Some fans even get his verses tattooed on their bodies!
His poems are so important that they are taught in universities. These include Tribhuvan University in Nepal and the University of Kerala in India.
In 2023, he won the 'Asia's Inspiring Poet Award'. He also received the 'Shaluk International Literature Award' in Bangladesh. That same year, he was named 'Author of The Month' by Spillwords Press in New York. As mentioned earlier, he won the prestigious SAARC Literary Award twice, in 2013 and 2015.

Personal Life
Suman Pokhrel comes from a family that has been involved in education and politics in Nepal. Both his grandfathers were politicians. His paternal grandfather, Bidhyanath Pokhrel, was also a poet. His maternal grandfather, Ganesh Prasad Rijal, was a member of Nepal's first parliament.
His father, Mukunda Prasad Pokhrel, was an engineer who worked for the government. His mother, Bhakta Devi Pokhrel, also worked for the Nepal government.
Suman Pokhrel married Goma Dhungel in 2002. They have two children: a daughter named Ojaswee and a son named Ajesh (also known as Mansoon). They live in their home in Biratnagar.
