Swadlincote is a town located in South Derbyshire, England. It is about 13 miles south of the city of Derby. The town is an important place because the local council, which helps run the area, has its meetings here. People who live in Swadlincote often call it 'Swad' for short.
In 2004, the population of Swadlincote was around 36,000 people. The town includes several smaller areas like Church Gresley, Midway, and Newhall.

A Look at Swadlincote's Past
Swadlincote has a long history. It was first mentioned in a very old book called the Domesday Book in 1086. This book was a survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror.
For many years, Swadlincote was known for its coal mining and clay works. These industries grew a lot until the time of the Second World War. Swadlincote was a main center for coal mining in South Derbyshire. However, coal mining in the area stopped in the 1990s.
The town got its first local government group, called a board of health, in 1871. This group helped manage local services. Since 1997, Mark Todd has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Swadlincote. An MP is a person elected to represent the area in the national government.
