Political Journey
Syed Saddiq has had an active political career. He started by working with government ministers. Then he helped form new political parties.
Starting in Politics
In 2015, Syed Saddiq worked as a Perdana Fellow (Felo Perdana). He assisted Nancy Shukri, who was a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department.
He became known in 2016. He joined 24 other young people in a group called Change Led by the Young Generation (Challenger). They spoke out against the leadership of Najib Razak.
Syed Saddiq led ARMADA (Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda). This was the youth wing of the BERSATU party. He was a spokesperson for BERSATU from its start in September 2016. He was also one of its founding members.
Becoming a Minister
Syed Saddiq ran for the Parliament in the 2018 general election. He won the seat for Muar. He was then made the Minister of Youth and Sports. This made him the youngest federal minister in Malaysia's history at 25 years old.
He was also the third youngest MP ever elected. The other two were Prabakaran Parameswaran (21 in 2018) and Najib Razak (22 in 1976). Because of his young age, some people in Parliament called him 'cucu' , which means 'grandson'.
The Undi18 Effort
As Minister of Youth and Sports, Syed Saddiq worked to lower the voting age in Malaysia. He wanted to change it from 21 to 18 years old. This effort was called "Undi18".
He believed that young people needed more political education first. In July 2019, he proposed a law to change the Federal Constitution. This law would lower the voting age to 18. The law was later changed slightly and proposed again.
On 16 July, the Dewan Rakyat (Parliament) approved the Constitution (Amendment) Act 2019. This law lowered the voting age and the age to run in elections to 18. It also allowed for automatic voter registration. In November 2021, the changes became official. The Undi18 amendments started on 15 December.
Leaving BERSATU
In May 2020, Syed Saddiq became an Independent politician. He was removed as a member and youth chief of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU). BERSATU was part of the ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) group at that time.
After leaving BERSATU, Mahathir and other MPs formed a new party called Party of Homeland's Fighters (PEJUANG). However, Syed Saddiq decided not to join PEJUANG. On 21 August, he announced he would start a new party. This party would be for young people and include people from all backgrounds.
Creating MUDA
On 17 September 2020, Syed Saddiq launched and helped create the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA). It officially became a political party on 23 December 2021.
In the 2023 state elections, MUDA ran against the government. They did not win any of the seats they contested.
