Discover Tarren y Gesail Mountain

Tarren y Gesail is a mountain that stands 667 meters (about 2,188 feet) tall. It's known as a "Marilyn," a "Hewitt," and a "Nuttall." These are all different ways to classify mountains based on their height and how much they rise above the land around them.

Where is Tarren y Gesail Located?

This mountain is located to the south of the much larger Cadair Idris. Tarren y Gesail and its nearby friend, Tarrenhendre, make up most of the "Tarren" group. These mountains start near the southern shore of Tal-y-llyn Lake. They stretch all the way to the Dyfi estuary. This area is a quiet part of Snowdonia National Park.

What Can You See at the Top?

The very top of Tarren y Gesail is a grassy ridge. You will find a cairn there, which is a pile of stones often used as a marker. There is also a trig point, a special pillar used by mapmakers.

From the summit, you get amazing views! You can see far to the south and east. Plynlimon and Cardigan Bay are visible in the distance. If you look north, the huge Cadair Idris mountain dominates the view. To the west, you can spot Maesglase.

Nearby Adventures and History

Between Tarren y Gesail and Tarrenhendre, you'll find some interesting spots. There's the Bryn Eglwys quarry, which was once a place where slate was mined.

Close by is Nant Gwernol railway station. This station is part of the famous Talyllyn Railway. The railway runs through the beautiful valley of the Nant Gwernol stream. It's a fun way to explore the area.

Some people think of the Tarren mountains as the "forgotten" peaks of Snowdonia. They are not as busy as Cadair Idris. This makes them a peaceful place to visit in the southwestern part of the national park.
