Starting in Figure Skating

Tatiana Totmianina began skating when she was four years old. Her mother, who enjoyed skating, introduced her to the sport. Tatiana took lessons at the sports palace in Perm, her hometown.

When she was 14, Tatiana was invited to train in Saint Petersburg. In 1995, she met Maxim Marinin at the Russian Nationals. Maxim had started pair skating in 1993 but needed a partner. They decided to skate together in 1996. Their first coach was Natalia Pavlova in Saint Petersburg. Svetlana Korol helped them with their routines.

Rising to Senior Level

Tatiana and Maxim improved steadily in the world of figure skating during the late 1990s. In 1998, they wanted Tamara Moskvina to coach them. She was busy, so she suggested Oleg Vasiliev, an Olympic champion from 1984. He first said no, but in 2001, he agreed to coach them.

Tatiana and Maxim moved to Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. They trained there under Oleg Vasiliev. They won their first big title at the European Championships in 2002. They placed 4th at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. They earned silver medals twice at the World Championships. Their rivals were the Chinese pair, Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo. Finally, in 2004, Tatiana and Maxim won their first World gold medal.

A Difficult Moment and Comeback

During a competition in October 2004, Tatiana had an accident during a lift. She fell and hit her head on the ice. She was taken to the hospital but recovered quickly. She was back on the ice within a few days.

The accident was hard for Maxim. He felt worried and found it difficult to lift Tatiana again. He worked with a sport psychologist to help him overcome his fear.

Continued Success and Olympic Gold

Tatiana and Maxim returned to competing just two months later in January 2005. They won gold at the Russian Nationals and then at the European Championships. In March, they competed at the World Championships in Moscow, Russia. They easily won their second World title in a row.

From then on, Tatiana and Maxim were the top pair in the world. In December 2005, Tatiana had a health issue but recovered. They won their fifth European Championship in January 2006. With their main rivals recovering from an injury, Tatiana and Maxim were the favorites for the Olympic gold in Turin, Italy. They won both the short program and the long program. This earned them the 2006 Olympic pair skating title.

After their Olympic win, Tatiana and Maxim decided to retire from competitive skating. They joined the Champions on Ice show, performing with other famous skaters. Tatiana has also appeared on the Russian TV show Ice Age as a skater or judge. She still performs with Maxim in ice shows in Russia.
