Taufik Hidayat (born August 10, 1981) is a famous Indonesian badminton player. He is now the Deputy Minister for Youth and Sport in Indonesia. Taufik is known for winning many big titles. He won at the World Championships and the Olympic Games. He also won the Asian Games twice and the Asian Championships three times. He was the youngest player to become world number one in men's singles. Taufik won the Indonesia Open six times. Many people think he is one of the best men's singles players ever. He is even called "Mr. Backhand" because of his amazing backhand shots.

Taufik Hidayat's Badminton Journey

When Taufik was young, he joined a badminton club called SGS in Bandung. There, he trained with a coach named Iie Sumirat.

Early Success and World Ranking

At just 17 years old, Taufik won the Brunei Open. He also reached the semifinals of the Asian Championships and the Indonesia Open in 1998. In 1999, he won his first Indonesia Open title. That same year, he played in the finals of the All England and Singapore Open. He lost to his rivals, Peter Gade and Heryanto Arbi. By 2000, at only 19, Taufik became the world's top-ranked player. This was after he won the Malaysia Open, Asian Championships, and Indonesia Open.

Winning the Asian Junior Championship

When Taufik was only 15, he won the boys' singles event. He beat his future rival, Chen Hong, in the final match.

2000 Sydney Olympics

Taufik played in the men's singles at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. This was his first Olympics. He made it to the quarter-finals but was defeated by Ji Xinpeng from China.

2004 Athens Olympics: Winning Gold

Taufik won the gold medal in men's singles at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He beat Hidetaka Yamada and Wong Choong Hann in the early rounds. In the quarter-finals, he defeated Peter Gade of Denmark. He then beat Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand in the semifinal. For the gold medal match, he played against Shon Seung-mo from Korea and won 15–8, 15–7.

In the same year, Taufik won the Indonesia Open again. He also won his second Asian Championships title.

2008 Beijing Olympics

Taufik competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was eliminated in the second round by Wong Choong Hann of Malaysia.

2012 London Olympics

Taufik participated in his fourth Summer Olympics at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He was eliminated in the round of 16 by Lin Dan from China. This was Taufik's last time competing in the Summer Olympics.

World Championships and Other Wins

2005 World Championships

In August 2005, Taufik won the men's singles title at the World Championships. He defeated the world number one player, Lin Dan of China, with a score of 15–3, 15–7. With this win, Taufik became the first men's singles player to hold both the Olympic and World Championships titles in back-to-back years.

Asian and SEA Games Gold Medals

Taufik won gold medals in men's singles at the Asian Games in 2002 (Busan) and 2006 (Doha). He also won the 2007 Asian Championship. Additionally, he earned two men's singles gold medals at the SEA Games in 1999 and 2007.

Taufik Hidayat's Playing Style

Taufik Hidayat was known for his amazing shots. His backhand smash was especially famous because it was so powerful. He also had a strong forehand jump smash and tricky drop shots. His footwork was smooth, and he was very good at playing shots close to the net.

One of his forehand jump smashes in the 2006 World Championships was recorded as the fastest in singles play. It reached a speed of 305 km/h (190 mph) in a match against Ng Wei. His powerful shots, combined with his clever net play, made him a very tough opponent.

Life Outside Badminton

Taufik married Ami Gumelar on February 4, 2006. Ami is the daughter of Agum Gumelar. They had a daughter named Natarina Alika Hidayat in August 2007.

In December 2012, Taufik opened his own badminton training center. It is called the Taufik Hidayat Arena (THA) and is located in Ciracas, East Jakarta. This center is known as his "house of badminton."
