Taufik Hidayat (born August 10, 1981) is a retired badminton superstar from Indonesia. After his amazing sports career, he became the Deputy Minister for Youth and Sport of Indonesia. He is famous for winning an Olympic gold medal, a World Championship, and two Asian Games gold medals.

Hidayat is also a six-time winner of the Indonesia Open. He was the youngest men's singles player to ever be ranked number one in the world. Known as Mr. Backhand, many people think he is one of the greatest badminton players of all time.

A Legendary Badminton Career

When Taufik Hidayat was young, he joined the SGS badminton club in his hometown of Bandung. There, he was trained by coach Iie Sumirat. He quickly showed incredible talent.

At just 17 years old, he won the Brunei Open. In 1999, he won his first Indonesia Open title. That same year, he reached the finals of the famous All England Open and the Singapore Open.

The year 2000 was huge for Hidayat. At only 19, he became the world's number one player. He earned this top spot by winning the Malaysia Open, the Asian Championships, and the Indonesia Open.

2004 Athens Olympics: Winning Gold

Hidayat's biggest moment came at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He played brilliantly throughout the tournament.

He beat Peter Gade of Denmark in the quarterfinals and Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand in the semifinals. In the final match, he faced Shon Seung-mo from South Korea. Hidayat won the match 15–8, 15–7, earning the Olympic gold medal.

2005 World Champion

In 2005, Hidayat won the World Championships. He beat the world number one player, Lin Dan of China, in the final. With this victory, Hidayat became the first men's singles player to ever hold the Olympic and World Championship titles at the same time.

Other Olympic Games

Hidayat played in four Olympic Games in total.

  • Sydney 2000: He reached the quarterfinals in his first Olympics.
  • Beijing 2008: He was knocked out in the second round.
  • London 2012: In his last Olympics, he lost in the round of 16 to his rival, Lin Dan.

Playing Style and Skills

Hidayat was famous for his amazing shots and smooth movement on the court. His biggest weapon was his backhand. He could hit a backhand smash so powerfully that it was hard for opponents to return.

He also had a very strong forehand jump smash. In 2006, one of his smashes was recorded at 305 km/h (190 mph), which was the fastest ever in a singles match at the time. His tricky drop shots and clever net play made him one of the most exciting players to watch.

Personal Life

Taufik Hidayat married Ami Gumelar, the daughter of Indonesian politician Agum Gumelar, in 2006. They have a daughter named Natarina Alika Hidayat.

In 2012, Hidayat opened a badminton training center called the Taufik Hidayat Arena (THA) in East Jakarta. He wanted to help train the next generation of badminton players in Indonesia.
