Professional ice hockey team Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (1993–2006)
Today known as the Anaheim Ducks, which are no longer owned by Disney.

The Mighty Ducks is a popular American story series. It includes three live-action movies from the 1990s by Walt Disney Pictures. There's also a live-action TV show called The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. Plus, an animated TV show, Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series, was made by Walt Disney Television Animation.

The story even inspired a real-life hockey team in the National Hockey League. The movies are about a young ice hockey team from Minnesota. These young players stick together through many challenges. Even though film critics didn't always love the movies, they were very successful. This success helped the Mighty Ducks world grow. The franchise also has other things like theme park rides.

The Mighty Ducks Movies

The Mighty Ducks story started with three live-action movies. Each film follows the journey of the hockey team.

The First Mighty Ducks Film (1992)

The first movie introduces Gordon Bombay. He's a lawyer who gets into trouble. As punishment, he has to coach a youth hockey team. This team, called District 5, is really bad. They lose every game by a lot.

The players soon learn that Coach Bombay used to be a great hockey player. He played for the Hawks, the best team in the league. But he quit hockey after missing a big shot. This shot cost his team the championship.

With Bombay's help, the District 5 team starts to learn how to play. They also get new equipment. The team is renamed the Ducks. They start winning games and make it to the playoffs. They even add a new talented player, Adam Banks, from the Hawks.

In the finals, the Ducks play against the Hawks. Their coach is Jack Reilly, Bombay's old coach. The Ducks win the championship. They win with a penalty shot taken by Charlie, one of Bombay's best players. In some countries, this movie was called Champions.

D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994)

After coaching the Ducks, Gordon Bombay tries to play hockey again. He becomes a star in the minor leagues. But a knee injury stops his career.

Then, he gets a chance to coach a team for the United States. This team will play in the Junior Goodwill Games. He brings back most of his old Ducks players. He also adds five new players from different parts of the country. Together, they form Team USA.

Team USA wins many early games. But the fame starts to distract Bombay and the players. They lose badly to Team Iceland. Bombay pushes them harder, but they keep losing.

Then, they meet a street hockey team. This team teaches them to play for fun again. A new player, Russ Tyler, joins the team. Bombay realizes that having fun is the most important thing. With a new attitude, the Ducks make it to the finals. They face Team Iceland again.

The game ends in a tie. It goes to a shootout. Thanks to their new goalie, Julie Gaffney, Team USA wins the championship!

D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996)

This movie focuses more on Charlie Conway, the team captain. After winning the Junior Goodwill Games, Charlie and his teammates get scholarships. They go to Eden Hall Academy, a fancy high school.

When they arrive, the varsity team isn't friendly. The Ducks also don't like their new coach, Ted Orion. He was chosen by Bombay. Orion wants them to play a very defensive style. Charlie doesn't like this and leaves the team. He thinks Orion is a washed-up player.

But Charlie learns the truth about Orion from Bombay. He then rejoins the team. Charlie and Orion start to get along. They prepare for a big game against the varsity team. Adam Banks, who had joined the varsity team, comes back to play for the junior varsity Ducks.

The Ducks win the game in the last seconds. Greg Goldberg, who used to be a goalie, scores the winning goal.

The Real NHL Team

After the first movie was a big success, The Walt Disney Company decided to create a real hockey team. This team was called the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. They started in 1993 and joined the NHL. Disney paid $50 million to start the team.

A new arena, Anaheim Arena, was built for the team near Disneyland. The team's name came directly from the movie. Tony Tavares became the team president, and Jack Ferreira was the general manager.

Ron Wilson was the first head coach. In 1993, the Mighty Ducks picked Paul Kariya as their fourth overall draft pick. He became a very important player for the team for many years.

The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim played their first season in 1993–94. They set a record for a new team with 33 wins. Many of their home games were sold out. The team's merchandise was also very popular. This was helped by Disney selling team gear in their theme parks and stores.

In 2005, Disney sold the team to Henry and Susan Samueli. They changed the team's name to the Anaheim Ducks before the 2006–07 season. That same season, the team won its first Stanley Cup championship!
