Lauren Helen Graham (born March 16, 1967) is an American actress and author. She is famous for playing Lorelai Gilmore in the TV show Gilmore Girls. She was even nominated for a Golden Globe Award for this role. Lauren also played Sarah Braverman in the TV series Parenthood from 2010 to 2015.
She has appeared in several movies like Sweet November (2001), Bad Santa (2003), The Pacifier (2005), Because I Said So (2007), Evan Almighty (2007), and Max (2015). In 2013, Lauren Graham published her first novel, Someday, Someday, Maybe. In 2016, she returned as Lorelai Gilmore for a Gilmore Girls special on Netflix called A Year in the Life. That same year, she also released a book of her own stories called Talking as Fast as I Can.

Early Life and Education
Lauren Graham was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her mother, Donna Grant, bought clothes for fashion companies. Her father, Lawrence Graham, worked for candy companies. Lauren was raised in her father's Catholic faith. She has Irish family roots. When her father worked in Vietnam, Lauren lived in Japan for a few years. Her mother also grew up there.
When Lauren was five, her parents divorced. She moved to the Washington, DC suburbs with her father. Her mother moved to London to follow a music career. Lauren was raised by her father, and they were very close. She felt good about her childhood. Lauren also spent some time growing up in Southampton, New York. She has a half-sister and a half-brother from her father's second marriage. Her British half-sister, Shade Grant, works at a talent agency.
As a young girl, Lauren loved riding horses in competitions. But she soon found her passion in acting. She practiced her acting skills at Langley High School. She graduated in 1984. She earned her actor's Equity Card in 1988. This happened after working for two summers at the Barn Theatre in Augusta, Michigan. Lauren first went to New York University. Then she moved to Barnard College. She graduated from Barnard in 1988 with a degree in English literature. In 1992, she moved to Texas. There, she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting Performance from Southern Methodist University.
Acting Career
Starting Out (1994–1999)
After finishing school, Lauren Graham moved back to New York City. She worked as a waitress and helped students prepare for the SAT test. She really wanted to be an actress. She even dressed up as Striker, the dog mascot for the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the US, for publicity events. In 1995, she moved to Hollywood. She appeared in many commercials for products like Cascade dishwasher detergent and AT&T. She also hosted special preview weekends on The Movie Channel.
From 1996 to 1997, Lauren was a guest star on several NBC shows. She played a smart student on 3rd Rock from the Sun. She was Richard's happy girlfriend on Caroline in the City. She also played Jerry's girlfriend on Seinfeld. She appeared in three episodes of Law & Order. In this show, she played a Hollywood producer who liked Detective Rey Curtis. She also played a very organized but lonely expert on NewsRadio.
Lauren also starred in four TV comedies that didn't last long. These included Townies, Good Company, Conrad Bloom, and M.Y.O.B..
Gilmore Girls and Movies (2000–2008)
In 2000, Lauren Graham got her most famous role. She became Lorelai Gilmore in Gilmore Girls. Lorelai was a quick-witted mom in her thirties. She was raising her teenage daughter in a small town in Connecticut. Lauren felt a strong connection to the story. She liked that the script was both serious and funny. For her acting, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 2002. She also received nominations at the SAG Awards in 2001 and 2002.
Starting with Season 7, Lauren also became a producer for Gilmore Girls. This was partly to encourage her to stay for an eighth season. But by the end of the series, she wanted to try new things.
Lauren also appeared as herself in two episodes of NBC's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. She was also on the show Celebrity Poker Showdown. She won her first game but came in second in the championship.
Lauren's movie roles include student films and big studio movies. These are Sweet November, Bad Santa, The Pacifier, Because I Said So, and Evan Almighty.

Broadway, Parenthood, and Gilmore Girls Reunion (2009–2016)
Lauren Graham made her Broadway debut in 2009. She played Miss Adelaide in the play Guys and Dolls. The show opened on March 1, 2009. It ran for 121 shows.
In January 2009, it was announced that Lauren would star in a comedy pilot called The Bridget Show for ABC. She was to play a talk show host. However, the show was not picked up for a full series. In September 2009, Lauren voiced Fran Lockwood, Flint's mother, in the animated movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. In October 2009, she took over the role of Sarah Braverman in the TV series Parenthood. Sarah was a single mother. The show started on NBC the next year and ran for six seasons.
In June 2010, it was confirmed that Lauren would be in Scream 4. However, she left the project later that month. In July 2012, Lauren was a guest judge on the reality TV show Project Runway.
In 2015, Lauren appeared in the movie Max. She played the mother of a marine who died in Afghanistan. Her character then adopted his Malinois dog. She based her character on her grandparents. She felt a connection to the movie because many people in the film's choir were from a church her grandfather attended. That year, Lauren also started appearing in The Odd Couple. She played Gaby, the ex-wife of the main character, Oscar. She also appeared in an episode of Repeat After Me.
Lauren's first movie in 2016 was the comedy-drama Joshy. In October 2016, she was in Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life. She played the mother of Griffin Gluck's character. Lauren related to the movie's title because she didn't like parts of her own youth. This made her interested in the film. That year, she also returned as Lorelai Gilmore for the Netflix reunion series, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Lauren said she cried when she read the script. She felt it was "beautiful and fitting." She was very thankful for everyone working on the series.
Recent Career (2017–Present)
In October 2017, Lauren Graham appeared in three episodes of the HBO comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm. She also voices Oxana Hauntley in the Disney Junior animated series Vampirina.
From 2020 to 2021, Lauren was an actress on the NBC show Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. She played Joan, who was Zoey's (Jane Levy) boss. From 2021 to 2022, Lauren starred as Alex Morrow in The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. This is a Disney+ TV series based on the 1992 film.
In 2024, Lauren Graham and Aisling Franciosi were cast in David Permut's movie Twinless. In 2025, Lauren will star in The Z-Suite streaming on Tubi. Her co-star is Nico Santos.
Writing
Lauren Graham's first novel, Someday, Someday, Maybe, was released on April 30, 2013. This funny novel is about her own experiences trying to become an actress in New York in the 1990s. In May 2013, the book became a New York Times best seller. Lauren signed a deal to turn it into a TV series. She wrote the screenplay for a pilot episode, but it was not filmed.
In November 2016, Lauren's second book was published. It is a collection of personal stories called Talking as Fast as I Can: from Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between). This book also became a New York Times best seller. In November 2022, Lauren published another book of personal stories, Have I Told You This Already?: Stories I Don't Want to Forget to Remember.
Lauren has also written a screenplay for the novel The Royal We. She finished the script in mid-2017. She has also bought the movie rights for the novel Windfall by Jennifer E. Smith. Lauren's book Don't Worry About It gives "advice for graduates and reflections on staying true to yourself." This was her third New York Times best seller.
Personal Life
Lauren Graham was in a relationship with actor Peter Krause from 2010 to 2021. They first met in 1995 when they were both on the TV show Caroline in the City. They became a couple while working together on Parenthood. In June 2022, it was reported that they had ended their relationship after 11 years.
In the mid-1990s, Lauren was roommates with actress Connie Britton. Lauren owns a house in Los Angeles. She has said that she identifies with Catholicism and goes to church sometimes.
