The Nightmare Room is an American TV show for kids. It is a series of different stories that are all about scary things. The show was on Kids' WB. It was based on a book series with the same name. The books were written by R. L. Stine, who also wrote the Goosebumps books. The Nightmare Room was first shown on August 31, 2001, and the last episode aired on March 16, 2002.

About the Show

The Nightmare Room is all about common fears that kids have. These include things like ghosts and monsters. Each episode usually ends with the narrator saying "the nightmare room." Then, a door with the show's logo closes.

The show was a bit like The Twilight Zone. It often had teenagers as the main characters. Many popular young actors of the time were in the show. These included Amanda Bynes, Frankie Muniz, Justin Berfield, Drake Bell, Brenda Song, Lindsey Felton, Shia LaBeouf, Kaley Cuoco, and Dylan and Cole Sprouse. Some famous adult actors also appeared, such as Robert Englund (who played Freddy Krueger).

The Nightmare Room was the only live-action show on Kids' WB. It was also the only live-action show to be part of the Kids' WB version of Toonami. The show was made by Parachute Entertainment, Tollin/Robbins Productions, and Warner Bros. Television.

Book Stories

The TV show was based on a series of books. Here are some of the stories from those books:

  • Don't Forget Me: Danielle and her brother Peter move into a new house. The basement is haunted by ghosts of children. These ghosts make people forget about their friends and family. They try to trick living children into joining them.
  • Locker 13: Luke Green is very superstitious. He gets Locker #13 at school. He tries to stop bad luck by finding a good-luck charm. But the charm has a scary secret.
  • My Name is Evil: A fortune teller at a carnival tells Maggie she is evil. Maggie thinks it's a joke. But then accidents happen at school, and everyone thinks Maggie is to blame.
  • Liar, Liar: Ross has lied for many years. Suddenly, his lies come true. He finds himself in a world where an evil twin tells him he will die soon.
  • Dear Diary, I'm Dead: Alex Smith finds a diary in his room. The diary predicts the future, even his own death.
  • They Call Me Creature: Laura needs to find out why the animals she takes care of are attacking her. She also wonders what her father is doing in the backyard shed.
  • The Howler: Spencer Turner loves electronics. He buys a machine called "The Howler." It lets people talk to the dead. But it summons a ghost family who want to hurt his friends and family.
  • Shadow Girl: Selena is a bored girl. She finds out she is a superheroine named Shadow Girl. Like all superheroes, she has an enemy who wants to defeat her.
  • Camp Nowhere: Russell goes to summer camp. He rows over Forbidden Falls. He ends up at a summer camp haunted by an evil Native American spirit.
  • Full Moon Halloween: It's a scary Halloween night. A teacher gathers four students. He tries to find out if one of them is a werewolf.
  • Scare School: Sam is haunted by a small demon at his new school. This demon bothers new students.
  • Visitors: Ben Shipley loves UFOs. He finds out that aliens are secretly taking over Earth.

The Nightmare Room Thrillogy

There was also a special series of three books called The Nightmare Room Thrillogy:

  • Fear Games: Twelve kids with special powers are chosen for a reality show called Life Games. It takes place on an island haunted by a scary witch.
  • What Scares You the Most?: April, one of the contestants, is stuck on the island. She must face her biggest fears to escape.
  • No Survivors: After escaping, April must go back to the haunted island. She needs to get rid of the witch's spirits for good.

Opening and Closing Narration

At the start of each episode, R. L. Stine seems to give a speech. It is like the famous opening speeches from The Twilight Zone.

When the lights fade and the moon rises, anything can happen. The world becomes a carnival of shocks and chills. A whirling merry-go-round that never stops, spinning faster and faster, taking you on a frightening ride. I'm R. L. Stine, don't fall asleep... or you might find yourself in The Nightmare Room.

—R. L. Stine

Even though it sounds like R. L. Stine, the voice for the narration was actually James Avery. He was famous for playing Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. James Avery also did the closing narration for every episode.
