Early Life and Learning About Art
Therman Statom was born in Winter Haven, Florida in 1953. He grew up in Washington, D.C. His father was a doctor. When he was a child, he became friends with Cady Noland. Her father, Kenneth Noland, was a famous painter.
Young Therman once told Kenneth Noland, "I can paint like that too!" Therman says that Kenneth Noland inspired him to become an artist.
Studying Glass Art
In 1971, Therman started learning about glass art. He went to Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. Later, he studied sculpture at Rhode Island School of Design. He earned his first degree there in 1974.
He then went to Pratt Institute School of Art and Design. He earned his master's degree in 1978. At Pratt, he started working with flat glass sheets. This was because the school did not have equipment for hot glass work.
In the early 1980s, Therman was invited to the University of California at Los Angeles. He visited their hot glass program. From 1983 to 1985, he led this program.
