Thomas Savage, 1st Viscount Savage (born around 1586 – died 20 November 1635), was an important English nobleman and a helper to King Charles I. He held the title of Viscount, which is a rank of nobility below an Earl but above a Baron. He was also the 2nd Baronet in his family.

His Early Life and Family Background

Thomas Savage was born around 1586. He was the oldest son of Sir John Savage, who was the 1st Baronet of Rocksavage in Cheshire. His mother was Mary Allington. When his father passed away on July 7, 1615, Thomas became the 2nd Baronet. This meant he inherited his father's title and some responsibilities.

What Did He Do in His Career?

Thomas Savage had an active career serving the King.

  • In 1616, he became a Deputy Lieutenant for Cheshire. This role meant he helped the King's main representative in the county.
  • He was made a knight on June 29, 1617, in Edinburgh. This was a special honor given by the King.
  • In January 1625, he became the Steward of Congleton.
  • He was appointed as a First Commissioner of Trade in 1626. This role involved advising on trade matters for the country.
  • Later in 1626, he became a Commissioner to help the King find ways to increase his income. He also helped sell some of the King's lands.
  • On November 4, 1626, he received the title of Viscount Savage. This was a significant step up in his noble rank.
  • In 1628, he became the Chancellor to the Queen Consort, Henrietta Maria. This was a very important position in the Queen's household.
  • By 1634, he was also a Councillor to the Queen.
  • He was also the Ranger of Delamere Forest in Cheshire. This meant he was in charge of managing the royal forest.

His Family and Children

Thomas Savage married Elizabeth Darcy on May 14, 1602. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Darcy, 1st Earl Rivers. Together, Thomas and Elizabeth had many children. They had eleven sons and eight daughters.

When Did Thomas Savage Die?

Thomas Savage died on November 20, 1635. He passed away from an illness called "the running gout" at his home in Tower Hill in London. He was buried on December 16, 1635, in the Savage family chapel at St Michael and All Angels' Church in Macclesfield, Cheshire. His mother was buried on the same day. At the time of his death, only ten of his nineteen children were still alive.

His oldest son, John, became the 2nd Viscount Savage. John later also became the 2nd Earl Rivers after his grandfather (Thomas's father-in-law) died in 1640. Thomas's wife, Elizabeth, was given the title of Countess Rivers for her lifetime in 1641. She died in 1651.
