The Story of Thomy

Some Thomy products, including mustard and mayonnaise in tubes

The story of Thomy began in 1907. A company called Helvetia was the first in Switzerland to make mustard in large amounts. They sold it in big pots under the name Langenthaler Senf.

Later, the brand became Thomi’s Langenthaler Senf. In 1930, it was officially named Thomy’s Senf. The letter 'i' in Thomi was changed to 'y'. This made the name Thomy sound more international.

Hans Thomi, who started Thomi & Franck SA, had a clever idea. He decided to sell his mustard in a tube. This made Thomy's mustard stand out from others.

In 1951, Thomy started making mayonnaise too. Then, in 1976, they began selling bottled salad dressings. A big food company, Nestlé, bought Thomy in 1971.

The Thomy Man Character

In 1931, Thomy held a competition for its customers. They asked people to create a character for the brand. About 20,000 ideas were sent in! The name Senf-Thomy was chosen. Along with it came the famous tube-shaped character. This character, often called "Thomymännli," has been the main symbol for Thomy since the early 1990s.

Today, Thomy products are made in a few countries. These include Switzerland, Serbia, Germany, and Israel. In Israel, the company Osem started making Thomy products in 2024. Even though it's made in these places, Thomy is sold all over Europe.

Thomy has factories in Karlsruhe and Neuss in Germany. It also has a factory in Basel, Switzerland.

Why Thomy is Popular in Switzerland

Thomy is very well-liked in its home country, Switzerland. For the past ten years, it has been voted one of the top twenty most popular Swiss brands. Almost all Swiss homes, about 99%, know the Thomy brand. Over 2.3 million households in Switzerland use Thomy products.

On average, a Swiss family uses about five tubes of Thomy mayonnaise each year. They also use about three tubes of Thomy mustard. Each person in Switzerland eats about 1 kilogram of mayonnaise and 500 grams of mustard every year.

Thomy Products

Thomy always tries to offer new and improved products. In 2008, they launched a new Tartare Light mayonnaise. This version had 50% less fat. They also started making mayonnaise from rapeseed oil.

Recently, Thomy has worked with Coop Naturaplan. Now, they also make organic mustard, mayonnaise, and salad dressings. These products are certified as organic.
