The Story of Thomy
The story of Thomy began in 1907. A company called Helvetia was the first in Switzerland to make mustard in large amounts. At first, their mustard was sold in big pots.
Later, the brand's name changed a few times. By 1930, it was called Thomy’s Senf. The letter 'i' in Thomi was changed to 'y' to make the name easier for people around the world to remember.
Hans Thomi, who started the company Thomi & Franck SA, had a clever idea. He decided to sell his mustard in a tube. This made Thomy's mustard special and different from other brands.
Thomy started making mayonnaise in 1951. Then, in 1976, they began selling bottled salad dressings too. In 1971, the big company Nestlé bought Thomy.
The Thomy Man Character
The famous "Thomy man" character, also known as "Thomymännli," was created after a competition in 1931. The company asked people to send in their ideas, and they received 20,000 responses! The name Senf-Thomy was chosen, along with the fun character shaped like a tube of mustard. This character has been the main symbol for Thomy since the early 1990s.
Today, Thomy products are made in Switzerland, Serbia, and Germany. Production in Germany started in 1956. Even though it's made in these countries, Thomy is sold all over Europe. Thomy has factories in Karlsruhe and Neuss in Germany, and in Basel, Switzerland.
Thomy's Popularity in Switzerland
Thomy is very popular in its home country, Switzerland. For the past ten years, it has been voted as one of the top twenty most popular Swiss brands. Almost all households in Switzerland (99%) know about Thomy. More than 2.3 million Swiss homes use Thomy products.
On average, a Swiss household uses about five tubes of Thomy mayonnaise and three tubes of Thomy mustard each year. This shows how much people in Switzerland enjoy Thomy's products!
