About Thunder Mountain
Thunder Mountain reaches a height of over 13,523 feet (4,122 meters). On its eastern side, there is a place called Thunder Pass. This pass is very high, at more than 12,720 feet (3,877 meters). It marks the western end of another mountain ridge called the Kings-Kern Divide.
Naming the Mountain
Thunder Mountain got its name from a man named George R. Davis. He was a topographer, which means he was a scientist who mapped out the shapes and features of the land.
Mr. Davis was also the first person known to climb Thunder Mountain. He reached the top in August 1905. He climbed it to place a benchmark there. A benchmark is a special marker that helps surveyors measure exact locations and heights.
The name "Thunder Mountain" first appeared on a map in 1905. This map was made by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS is a government agency that studies the Earth. The name was officially recognized in 1928 by the United States Board on Geographic Names. This board is in charge of approving names for places in the United States.
