Thursby is a small village in the Cumberland area of Cumbria, England. It is located close to the city of Carlisle. Thursby was once part of the historic county of Cumberland.

History of Thursby

Thursby is built on an old Roman road. It is about 6 miles south of Carlisle. The name 'Thursby' comes from 'Thor's by'. This means "Thor's village". Thor was the Thunder God in old Saxon stories. People believed his temple was nearby at Kirksteads.

The village mainly grew around its church. This church is a Victorian building. It was built in 1846. Sir Wastell Brisco of Crofton Hall paid for it. An older church was said to be built by King David I of Scotland.

Famous People from Thursby

  • Sir Thomas Bouch (1822–1880) was a British railway engineer. He was born and grew up in Thursby.

Thursby is part of the Penrith and Solway area. This area chooses a person to represent it in the UK Parliament. Before 2020, the village was also part of a larger area. This area sent people to the European Parliament.

Evening Hill is a 17th-century farmhouse. It also has clay parts. It sits at the end of the village. A bit further is Evening Hill House. This house was built in 1833. It has cool, twisted chimneys.

St Andrews Church

St Andrews Church is at the west end of Church Lane. It was built in 1846. This is Thursby's main church. It helps organize many activities for the village. The Brisco family paid for this church. It was built where an older church stood. Some say King David I of Scotland built the first church.

Getting Around Thursby

Two main roads go through Thursby. These are the A595 and the A596. These roads connect Thursby to Carlisle. A train station called Curthwaite railway station used to be nearby. It closed in 1950.

Thursby is in a rural area. The bus service is the main way to get around. The most common bus is the 38. It is run by Stagecoach. This bus goes from Eden Street in Silloth to Carlisle Bus Station.
