Tika Sumpter was born in Queens, New York City. When she was in high school, she was a cheerleader. She finished high school at Longwood Senior High School in Middle Island, New York. After that, she went to Marymount Manhattan College. There, she studied communications, which is about how people share information.
Career
Starting Out (2000–2011)
Tika Sumpter began her career as a model. She appeared in commercials for big companies like Hewlett-Packard and for Liz Claiborne's perfumes. Before she became a full-time actress, she also worked as a waitress.
In 2004, Tika became a co-host for a reality TV show called Best Friend's Date. This show was on a Nickelodeon channel called The N, which is now known as TeenNick. The next year, she got a role in the daytime soap opera One Life to Live. She played a character named Layla Williamson. For her acting as Layla, Tika was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in 2008. She was on the show regularly from 2005 to 2010 and made a few guest appearances in 2010 and 2011.
In 2010, Tika Sumpter made her first movie appearance in Stomp the Yard: Homecoming. She also had a small part in the movie Salt. Tika Sumpter has one daughter, Ella-Loren, who was born on October 8, 2016. In January 2017, Tika announced that she was engaged to her The Haves and the Have Nots co-star, Nicholas James. He is her daughter's father. They got married in 2022.
